The normal answer to this problem is to start talking about the 'lock' slider on the side of the memory card. However, your problem must be different because your camera uses the xD-Picture card... and it has no such slider! In this case, the most likely reason is that the card has been corrupted in some way, and the camera's error message is more of a general nature, triggered by some inability to write to the card. Your best bet is to make sure that you've copied all you want off the card and then use the camera's 'format' function to reformat the card. I advise using the camera for the format function because this guarantees the correct file system. If you use your computer to format it, you may easily get the wrong one. However if you need to do it this way, see which file system is currently in use on the drive before you start. Go to "My Computer" and right click on the correct drive and choose "Properties". Examples of filesystems are "FAT" (probably FAT16), "FAT32" and NTFS; to make sure your reformat is successful, ensure you use the same filesystem as before.

Actually, I'd like to thank you for drawing my attention to this, because I've been advising people with SD cards that the error must be caused by the slider... however, from what I've learned now, it's also possible that their cards can be fixed by reformatting, too.

Check your memory card and see if it has a lock switch on it, if it does and it is locked it wont accept images for overwrite protection , another possibility is a faulty or non-readable card, some memory cards will not work with some devices, sometimes a kingston memory will not work and if you insert a sony or a memorex or any other manufacturer it may work or accept the card, if the camera does not read the card it will not save pics therefore u wont see any images on your PC o in cam playback, try that and see if it works for you, let me know.

Good luck ,

You can either use a separate card reader to download to your computer, or , take the card to a Walmart store and insert the card into a Kodak Picture Kiosk machine and print the pics or make a cd of them. Then, format the card in the camera.

Firstly, whenever you put the media card into a card reader, ALWAYS turn write-protect on, to protect the images already on the card.
Secondly, AFAIK, the only way that your computer could have 'wiped' the card is if you told it to Move the images, rather than just Copy them. Again, setting write-protect would have solved this.

Internal memory??

Highly recommend that you consider using a card reader to download you pictures. You insert the camera's memory card into the reader, and then insert the reader into a USB port on your computer. The card then shows up as a hard drive so that you can simply copy/paste or drag your picture files onto your computer. Card readers are much more faster in downloading pics, do not require the use of your camera's batteries, and provide much more reliable downloading of the pictures (fewer errors). They're also VERY inexpensive these days. Here are some examples of CF card readers from Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/s/qid=1223745821/ref=sr_st?keywords=cf+compact+flash+card+reader&rs=172282&page=1&rh=n%3A172282%2Ck%3Acf+compact+flash+card+reader&sort=price

Also, if the card has somehow become corrupted, take no more pics until you've recovered the photos. Take the card out of the camera. Here's some freeware photo recovery software that should be what you're looking for:
http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2007/12/recovering-those-accidentally-lost.html

You will also need to use a card reader with this software. Finally AFTER you've recovered your photos, recommend formatting the card IN YOUR CAMERA to prevent this from happening again. Note that formatting will totally erase your card. Turn on the camera, press the menu button, select the tools menu. Go down to the selection that states your CF card's memory capacity and select it. Then follow the formatting prompts.
