Hard disk drive not deteted during windows installation

  • Anonymous Jan 12, 2009

    drive

I have the same problem. I have a xw8200 that I purchased used, and when I try to install XP Pro a message pops up saying "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer."

The HP setup menu see them, but the Windows install disk is being lame.

My real problem is that the install disk is is on a CD-ROM, and there is no other optical drive on this workstation, so how would I install the driver via CD-ROM with the Windows install disk already in the CD tray?

I was unable to get a SATA drive to be recognized by my SR1200NX with an A7V8X-LA motherboard.

A couple rounds with tech support, initially saying it would work with no effort or driver or BIOS update needed due to the chipset support, but no drive detected.

I tried the BIOS update (from 3.11 to 3.15), no change in SATA drive detection.

Then Compaq support said I needed to jumper the SATA drive it for 1.5 rather than 3.0.

This made the difference. Came up in the BIOS and I could access the drive (Seagate Barracuda 7200.12).

This problem arises due to a missing driver in windows installation. download your specific driver and copy it to a floppy drive. Then start the windows setup. As the setup loads it will ask "Press F6 to load a SATA RAID driver".Press F6 and insert the floppy into Floppy disk drive.
And continue the setup...

I bought a third party ie seagate 160 gb sata hard disk and replaced in my laptop but windows installation disk did not find any hard disk present in the computer. how to install a third party hard disk ?

If you are installing Windows XP on a SATA hard drive, Windows installation CD does not have a SATA driver, that is why it does not detect the hard drive. please click on this link and follow my instruction to install Windows on a SATA hard drive :-

Not recognizing hard disc drive for windows xp reinstall .

You aren't using the correct install disk . The generic XP install disk can't recognize a SATA disk. You will have to load the appropriate driver during install. Here it is ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp32001-32500/sp32492.exe
Or you could create a custom install disk  as explained here

Bought HP Pavilion dv2910tx,not able to install Windows XP. Help

If the install cannot detect the hard disk then the hard disk is faulty and needs replacing or the disk controller is faulty.
You can check if the hard disk is faulty by :-
Go into the BIOS and check if there a hard disk diagnostic.
If not then remove the hard drive and connect it to an USB hard drive adapter and plug it into a working computer's USB port.
If this computer see it as an external hard drive and you can view the contents of the drive then it is OK and the fault is the disk controller on the laptop.
To setup XP.
You insert the Windows CD and boot up the laptop with the CD.
You have done this correctly to get the hard disk error message.

Trying to partition internal hard drive, taking along time!

Windows 98 thru Vista will partition format the hard drive during installation. Starting with XP, it can handle partitions over 1GB (1000MB).
If it is a new drive, let windows do a "quick format" during installation.
