Can't find when searched for

It is probably time for a replacement. We've found that we routinly replace linksys wireless routers after about 1 year or service usually no more than 2 before they die.
Usually the wifi section slows, then become intermittant and finally stops working.

About the only thing you can do is do a hard reset. This will reset it back to factory defaults so you have to setup everythign again. Push and hold the reset button for about 10-20 seconds. That will then restore it to the way you had it new from the store. Having said that usually this will at best temporally fix it or do nothing. It is worth a try but don't forget a new router is maybe $40 so don't get too worried about fixing it.

Linksys wrt160n will not broadcast the internet wireless or ethernet it will however broadcast a connection to the router not the internet. I have tried to re-set it, power down, nothing works. I have not...

Your Linksys WRT160N is a router that can be accessed via CAT-5 cables and wirelessly. You must configure the router though, for wireless use. If this is not configured or not configured correctly, then you may have problems using it wirelessly. Laptop computers usually use the 802.11g mode, not the 802.11n, at 54MB or with the right NIC in a desktop you can get 108MB. If it was working then quit without your doing anything, you may have to replace the router, but I doubt it.

Cant get the Linksys to find the Optus DSL network

do you have security enabled on the wireless router?
if so, disable to security and see if you can connect.
if it works, check if you set the router security to use WPA2- it is possible that your laptop/wireless card doesn't support it- try to use WPA instead

I have a printer attached via USB to a wi-fi connected desktop in a WGR614g network which supports an additional ethernet-connected desktop and two wi-fi laptops. Can I make the printer wi-fi accessible...

Do a search engine hunt for a "WIRELESS PRINT SERVER" and you'll bring up a Netgear WGPS606 for about $60-80 or a Linksys for $36-150 (the same one :-)).

The Netgear has 2 USB A ports and 4 ethernet ports. You plug in your printer, activate the wireless part to receive a signal and you have a networked USB printer.

I assume the Linksys works exactly the same way, except it may not have the additonal 4-port ethernet switch.

The lights are on but the linksys is not working

Certainly if the conection directly from the router to the computer is not working then the wireless won't work. So that's where I'd start. Cable connections could be an issue. The connection without the router works I assume. Make sure you are connected correctly. You need ethernet cabling to the ethernet, networking connections to and from the internet device to the computer and into and out of the router. When you get the direct router connections working you can solve your wireless problems.
