How to Replace Dell Ink Cartridges

Dell printers are quite similar to HP printers as far as their ink cartridges go. Of course, all ink cartridges are the same in one way--they all need replacing once they run out of ink. Many people choose to toss out and replace the ink cartridges altogether with brand new ones. However, it is also possible to keep the old cartridges and just replace the ink that was inside, allowing them to work like new.
jQuery('.intro .thumbnail').each(function(i,e){ jQuery(e).find('img').one('error',function(){ jQuery(e).remove(); }); }); Difficulty: Easy Instructions

  1. 1 Open the front cover on the printer. The print cartridges should slide on a conveyor belt from one far end of the print chamber to near the center. There should be one black ink cartridge and one color cartridge.
  2. 2 Remove the cartridges from the printer. This should simply involve grabbing and pulling the cartridges out. There may be a flap holding the cartridges in place that you need to flip up first. Or you may need to press down on the cartridges to spring them out of place.
  3. 3 Decide on replacing the cartridges with a brand new ones or refilling the existing cartridges. Refilling the cartridges can cost less money in the long-term and reduce waste, while new cartridges will guarantee to work and have the most ink up front.
  4. 4 Refill the cartridges with fresh ink in order to reuse them. With black cartridges, you need to drill or melt a hole in the cartridge lid, while you will remove the lid to find the color cartridge's holes. Inject the correct color ink with a plastic syringe bottle. Reseal the lid on a color cartridge after refilling.
  5. 5 Dispose of the cartridges properly after you purchase new ones. Take the old cartridges with you to whichever store you get the new ones from. Not only will this help you find the correct replacements, but the store may also take the old cartridges for recycling.
  6. 6 Insert the new or refilled cartridges into your printer. New cartridges likely have protective tape over the print head that you'll need to remove. Run a test print on the computer to make sure that the cartridges properly work.
  7. 7 Check to see if the printer still reads the cartridges as being empty (if you are reusing a refilled one). This will be due to a chip in the cartridges that the printer reads for the ink level. It doesn't change just because you refilled the cartridges. You must purchase an electronic device that will reset the chip for you.

Blank pages coming out of i850 with new printhead

Alarm / Power light flashes orange 7 times consecutively is a Print head error so it sounds like you did the right thing.

I would reseat the printhead along with each one of the ink cartridges. Make sure that you removed the tape from the bottom of each of the ink cartridges and try it again. After installing the new printhead, you should have run a printhead cleaning cycle immediately after installing.

Issue: Certain colors are missing or no ink prints on the paper
Solution: Install / replace the recommended ink tanks correctly i550 / i850

Untitled Document How to install / replace the ink tanks
The ink tanks suitable for the printer are as follows;

Black Ink Tank BCI-3eBK
Cyan Ink Tank BCI-3eC
Magenta Ink Tank BCI-3eM
Yellow Ink Tank BCI-3eY

Note: There are two ink tank label designs.
Operation procedures are shown with label design A.

labelsa.jpg Replacement Procedure

1. Check that the printer is powered on, and open the front cover. Wait until the print head moves to the center.

2. Remove the empty ink tank by pushing the tab on the ink tank.

Note: When doing this, do not remove the print head. When replacing multiple ink tanks, it is recommended to replace one at a time to avoid inserting them into the wrong slots.
(The image is an example using i850.)

removingtank850.jpg
3. Remove the new ink tank from its package. Pull the orange tape in the direction of the arrow to remove it completely, and remove the shrink-wrap film.

Note: Remove the orange tape completely. If the tape remains, printing may not be performed properly.

removingtape.jpg
Confirm that the orange tape is completely removed from the ink tank, as shown in image 1. If the tape is similar to the sample in image 2, remove the remaining portion of the tape so that it looks like the sample shown in image 1.

orangetape.jpg
(1): Correct

(2): Incorrect (where the arrow indicates)
4. Slowly twist the orange protective cap in the direction that the arrow indicates, and remove it. To avoid ink adhering to your fingers, brace the orange protective cap while removing it.

5. Insert the new ink tank to the print head by holding it at a slight angle.

Note: Confirm that the ink tanks are installed in the right order according to the labels on the print head.
