Hi,

I have an older dishwasher also and recently my wife also complained about it not cleaning right... so me being the man I am tried in vain to clean the things... Bought new spray arms online and installed them in minutes...now the thing works like new... However I have also found that if the heating element goes bad then that also can mess things up bad... So I would buy new spray arms, and also check out the heating element to make sure it is working... Here is a tip that will help you with the online buying...

There's a bad film being left on my dishes. What's the best way to clean my dishwasher and also the best detergent to be using for this dishwasher?

A cheap and natural solution could be to run vinegar through the washer. Not sure what your brand of dishwasher is but you should be able to find reviews through Consumer Reports or similarly through Google Shopping, or Amazon. Just search for Detergent and check out reviews.

I just moved into a house with a Roper dishwasher. I could not find a users manual that would tell me what type of soap that could be used in this machine (powder or liquid?) and where to put the soap in...

The dishwasher will clean best if you use a name brand powder. As you look at the inside of the door of your dishwasher, you should find some sort of dispenser cup or tray, with a lidd that closes some how.

You do not need to fill the cup(s) full of powder to get clean dishes.

Also, you should have a rinse aid dispenser that should be refilled fairly often.

Dishwasher not cleaning dishes

If you are using a name brand powder detergent and still getting the film, the next most common cause is a failed heating element.
Even if the water filling the dishwasher comes in at 120 degrees (f) but the time the powder is released from the dispenser, often the entering water is not hot enough to desolve/activate the powder.
I bet replacing the element will fix you right up!

Washing machine filter for roper top loader

it has a self cleaning filter mounted under the tub. if you want to clean out the tub and filter thoroughly then:
  • run a cycle with no clothes using hot water and a gallon or two of bleach.
  • after the tub has filled up add a teaspoon or less of dish liquid like palmolive. this acts like a surfactant for the bleach.
  • make sure you also run an extra rinse cycle to make sure you have all the bleach out of the machine before putting clothes in.
