I have the error message and an alarm light indicating that I need to unlock my scanner switch. I've done that probably 25 times to no avail. I've turned the machine upside down and shaken it, I've unplugged it, I've disconnected it from the computer, I've done everything I can think of to make it work and I get nothing from it. No printing, no scanning, nothing. What can I do to make it re-set or at least function like it's supposed to! It's not very old either.
I have this very same problem. I am told to release the scanner lock swith and turn the power back on. Where is this switch? Help....I have this very same problem. I am told to release the scanner lock swith and turn the power back on. Where is this switch? Help....
My MP830 has the same problem, however, my scanner lock switch IS switched to the unlock position and it is stuck there. I can't do anything with the printer and I can reset it. Not sure what to do as it is not under warranty anymore and Canon wants me to buy a refurbished machine at a discount? I don't think so, my machine is not that old and hardly EVER used. I am really irritated at Canon and their customer service. My MP830 has the same problem, however, my scanner lock switch IS switched to the unlock position and it is stuck there. Lift the document cover, and you should see a small gray slide type switch on the top of the scanner, near the front left corner of the glass. Slide the switch to the unlock position, close the document cover, turn off the machine. Wait five seconds, and turn machine back on. This should restore the scanner function.

Beneath the scanner is a lock switch, ensure that it is in the unlocked position.
If it is in the unlocked position and it still displays this error message then you will need to get a technician to free the reader assembly and give it a clean. Not too big a job. It's a good little scanner I enjoy mine, even after the same thing happened to it.
I have just read it on the other forum..try this one Error Code 5020: Scanner lock switch locked. [5020] Release the scanner lock switch and turn the power off and back on. Turn the machine off, unlock the scanner lock switch, then turn the machine on again. Hope it helps.
Sounds like the scan head is locked. This is usually done so you can transport the scanner without bouncing the scan head out of alignment. Look under the scanner and you will see it. Make sure it's in the UNLOCKED position. You may need to power the unit off/on to reset it or restart your computer to get a fresh attempt at the scanner.
Open the Lid for scanner, check for a switch on the side for Scanner Lock. Try to switch it to unlock position and retry booting up Printer. That should take care of scanner error message.
Issue: ERROR LCD: Release the scanner lock switch and turn the power off and back on.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Solution: Unlock the scanner lock switch
The scanner must be unlocked before turning the unit on.
Turn off the power.
Lift the document cover.
The scanner lock switch is on the left hand side of the underside of the document cover.
Slide the scanner lock switch to the release mark (an open padlock icon).
Lock the switch before transporting.
Close the document cover.
Turn the machine on.
If machine still is not working repeat the power off / on cycle waiting 5 seconds in between.
Press the power switch to the OFF (O) position. The power switch is located on the lower, left side of the machine.
Pull the scan lock switch toward the front of the machine to unlock the Scanner.
NOTE: The scan lock switch is located on the bottom of the Scanner Module. Make sure the scan lock is completely free. It sometimes hangs at the halfway point.
Press the power switch to the ON (|) position. A 'Warming Up, Please Wait' message will be displayed on the Display Screen. Warm up time is less than 40 seconds from power ON and less than 25 seconds from the Power Saver mode.
Release the lock, down the scanner is a tiny plastic piece between the oupt tray (the place where the paper goes out) and the top of the scanner
