A common question on on our site is about different fan sound that happen and the causes. These noises are often fairly easy to fix and some are the result of other problems.

If you are hearing a rattling sound or a squeaking, high pitched squeal coming from the bottom or back or the refrigerator then the condenser fan motor is probably going bad. Sometimes the bearing in the fan motor will even get so bad that the fan blade will start to hit anything that is close to it down there. This can create a very loud noise. This fan normally will be running when ever the compressor is running also.

As with any other problems you will want to get these things fixed promptly. If the problem is just a squeal a bit of light motor oil will do wonderful things for you. Many times though, you will have to order the parts needed to fix the problem. When repairing the problem make sure to remove all power the the unit and to wear gloves is possible, as there are many sharp edges in close quarters that will butcher you hands in no time.

The other fan that can cause sound is the evaporator fan. While this fan too can get worn and become noisy, it also can sometimes start to hit ice that is building up because of a problem with the defrost system of the refrigerator. Checkout my tips about defrost problems if you find a build up of ice and the fan is hitting the ice and making noise. This fan can also be oiled if needed, and it will also wear out and need to be replace occasionally. This fan usually will go off when the door is opened, so sometimes it makes it difficult to figure out exactly what is happening. By holding the door switch in manually, you can get the fan to run and troubleshoot it more easily. Make sure to remove all power before trying to service the fan. Spinning fan blades do not play nice with your hands!

For many refrigerators you will have to remove some covers or even the whole bottom of the freezer to get to this fan for replacement. Checking the exploded views at appliance parts websites can give you an idea of where the fan is located and what must be removed to get to it for replacement.

Both of these fans and the associated parts are available for most refrigerators online. Look for them at the appropriate spots in the exploded views of the units.
