I have a Canon EOS 50D Digital Camera and use 3 different Canon Lenses. I am getting "Error 30". I have taken the internal battery out and re-installed the firmware. At times I can shoot quite a number of shots before getting the error. But, once I start getting the error, it comes about every 4 or 5 shots. I believe this is very similar to the "Error 99" in the Canon 30D, which I also have. The 30D has been sent to Canon for repair and worked for a while and now it gets the Error 99 every couple of shots. Any chance I can get this fixed without sending back to Canon?

Almost all early Quantaray lenses (and Sigma lenses, Sigma made Quantaray) in the Canon EOS mount will show error messages on Canon digital cameras (but still work fine on older EOS film cameras). usually err99 but err01 also. There is no DIY fix and Sigma ran out of update parts years ago. Current production lenses and Canon made lenses will not have this problem. This lens would only work for someone shooting EOS film cameras with no intention of "upgrading" their system to digital Canon cameras in the future.
Receiving multiple error codes definitely indicates that your camera should be taken in for service. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do on your end in terms of troubleshooting or fixing a range of error codes. The camera needs to be sent in for service. If your camera's still under warranty, you can ship it in to the nearest Canon warehouse and have it repaired for free.
Malfunctions related to the electric control have been detected. It's also a common code for issues with the shutter. Best advice is to take it to a Canon dealer and get it repaired by a certified facility.
Sorry about the trouble you're having with the camera. I searched the manual for error code 30, but I found nothing.
You could try Ritz, but I think you'll find they're probably not set up for repairs. Since the camera is less than a year old, I would think it is covered under a Canon warranty. Having a third party attempt repairs would probably violate the terms of the warranty, so you might reconsider that. I suggest arranging for Canon factory service to make the repairs for you instead. You can arrange for that via the link provided below:
Lastly, there is an updated version of the firmware for your camera. Released 7/30/09 it is probably not installed since you purchased your 50D prior to then and due to your admitted "technology challenged" status. This update may help with the error, but there is little info I could find about it. Again, the folks at Canon can help you out best with this.
FYI - I have having the same problem, except I have never gotten the flicker or error message. Everything is just dead. I replaced the internal date/time battery - no change.
