Projection TV2_bing.gif sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

Convergence problems are very common on all Projection TV sets including Sony, Samsung2_bing.gif, JVC, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Akai, Pioneer, Hitachi, Zenith2_bing.gif, and others. You can get a convergenece repair kit from the link below.

Common Symptoms include....
  • Screen looks 3D2_bing.gif
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on - TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some photos of convergence problems.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash2_bing.gif focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a solution

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from www.TvRepairKits.com

Convergence issue. The sony type 1 convergence kit from www.tvrepairworld.com should repair that issue. The kit contains the parts and CD with instructions.

The colors are separated. Images are blurry and

Try adjusting the convergence. If it won't move see below- (or hitting Magic Focus for some Hitachi’s)
This sounds like convergence output IC problem. convergence board would have to be removed - remove and replace 2 STK IC's and check the surrounding resistors. Shops usually charge between $200-$400 Be sure to vote/rate me if this helped Thanks!

Double images and no owners manual

First try going into the customer menu of the TV. Look for the convergence alignment parameter and see if you can move the images back into place.

If you can't move the images back together, this is a failure of the convergence circuit in the TV. The convergence output ICs will need replacement and the TV should then be re-aligned. Look for a service center that is factory authorized. Expect to spend $350-$500 to have this issue resolved.

RED SHADOW AROUND IMAGES of SONY KP-57WS510 RPCRT

Your set uses two STK392-560 convergence ICs they are attached to a large heat sink on the D board. You can save your self about 400 for a twenty minute repair by getting new ICs at the following link as trhey provide free instalation instructions with pics so you can do the job yourself. It only requires basic soldering skills I would order about six 4.7ohm 1/2 watt resistors as well just in case you need them asusually sonys' will burn one or two of the 4.7ohm convergence resistors when the ICs fail. Converge problem on a kp-65ws500 sony rear proyection tv

You can download a copy of the service manual that explains how to enter service mode and perform convergence of the red/blue/green guns, but unless you are comfortable doing something like this, you may be better off calling a good shop familiar with rear projection sets and getting a quote to have a convergence service performed.
