Welcome to Fixya

Lens might be dirty that is why it is giving the unit hard time to read the disc. Try to use a cd cleaner first to clean the lens.

Thank you for using Fixya!

Yes, review the manual and find out what formats the unit will read. you then tailor your cd/dvd burning sw to that format. Also make sure the unit can understand and playback mpeg files.

Samsung hr577a My DVD player WILL play 'burned' discs but rejects pre-recorded discs stating that the disc cannot be read or recorded to. Can you help

Possible that the player is region locked and so does not play discs from other format or mass recorded type.
You need to check with standard legal discs to see if this works , is so the player must be unlocked.
Please take an opinion from the dealership who sold this unit to confirm if this is covered under warranty.

Dvd player/ recorder will only play dvd-r's or dvd-rw's not region 2 discs

If you bought this recorder/player in the United States, then it comes in the box only able to play region 1 dvds. Im not sure of your question, but if you are having trouble playing other region discs, well that is why. Very few devices sold in the United States will play other regions. I went to Sharps website and their info there said nothing about this unit being able to play any other regions than region 1.

If you google the model, some people talk of a code to enter to make it play other regions but I could not find any info pertaining to whether this is true or not!

Hope that gives you some help!

Message,"This disc is not formatted to play in this region".

DVD video discs may be encoded with a region code restricting the area of the world in which they can be played. Discs without region coding are called all region or region 0 discs.
The commercial DVD player specification requires that a player to be sold in a given place not play discs encoded for a different region (region 0 discs are not restricted). The purpose of this is to allow motion picture studios to control aspects of a release, including content, release date, and, especially, price, according to the region. Many DVD players are or can be modified to be region-free, allowing playback of all discs.Region 1 Players/DVDs include: Canada, United States, US Territories, and Bermuda. See below:
Region code Area 0 Informal term meaning "worldwide". Region 0 is not an official setting; discs that bear the region 0 symbol either have no flag set or have region 1–6 flags set. 1 Canada, United States; U.S. territories; Bermuda 2 Western and Central Europe; Western Asia; Egypt, Japan, South Africa, Swaziland; United Kingdom, Turkey, French overseas territories 3 Southeast Asia; South Korea; Taiwan; Hong Kong 4 Australia; Oceania; Central and South America; Caribbean; Mexico 5 Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Africa, Central and South Asia, Mongolia, North Korea. 6 China, Hong Kong 7 Reserved for future use (found in use on protected screener copies of MPAA-related DVDs and "media copies" of pre-releases in Asia) 8 International venues such as aircraft, cruise ships, etc.[1] ALL Region ALL discs have all 8 flags set, allowing the disc to be played in any locale on any player.

SAMSUNG HR733 DVD RECORDER WILL NOT PLAY ANY REGION DISCS AT ALL

On page 45 of the user manual it says this:

Both the HDD & DVD RECORDER and the discs are coded
by region. These regional codes must match in order for the
disc to play. If the codes do not match, the disc will not play.
The Region Number for this HDD & DVD RECORDER is
described on the rear panel of the HDD & DVD RECORDER

If you changed the region codes on your player it will not work. They should be set back to 1 or whatever your model says on the back of the unit.

If this unit was purchased outside the United States, it may not work in the United States.

Here is a copy of the manual if you need it:
