First of all you need to identify whether your LCD screen is bad or not. You can do this by shooting a picture and downloading it to your PC. If the picture is ok, then your LCD is bad. You need to replace the LCD screen. It is not cheap to replace it.

If your camera is under warranty, try to get it fixed on warranty terms.

A cheaper way, but time consuming. Try to replace the LCD yourself. Remember that you are doing it on your own risk. Warranty becomes void once you open the camera.

Learn some basics from websites. Look at the following web sites:

If you think you can do it, then buy a jewellers screwdriver set for $1 from Dollar store. Bua a used camera (a similar one sold for parts, but with good LCD) through ebay.com. You have to look for it. You may be able to get it very cheap, may be under $15. Remove the casing on the camera (5-6 screws). Carefully and gently remove the casing, dont break it. Once you open it, usually LCD is immediately accessible.

When I turn the camera on, the image that I am shooting does not show on the LCD monitor. When I switch the camera mode to view images I have taken previously, they show up but the new images are not...

there are many point you may want to look at.

first, if the LCD does not display the picture you just capture, there is a possibility that the digital module of the device is broken and that it does not show or save the pictures you have recently captured.

if the pictures you recently captured can be viewed on a computer, there is a possibility that the connection between the LCD and the camera is loose. we canot say that tha issue is the LCD since it displays previoulsy captured image.

to work around the issue, it is best if you visit a local repair shop or a technician to have a look at the unit and have it repaired.

as per the cost, it will actually depend on the damage of the device. you may want to put a new camera as one of your options.

Black viewfinder and screen

Most likely it is a mechanical failure such that the reflection mirror does not return back to its normal position, then blocking any light to the viewfinder.

Check this by unmounting the lens. If so, you may have to consider a repair operation.

It doesn't take pictures...

Sounds like a defective CCD imager. You may be in luck. Canon should fix this for you for free, including free shipping both ways. Please check the following two links for more info:

Blank black screen for my canon powershot S1 IS digital camera

This is a common problem with S1 IS and it is caused by faulty CCD sensor. Note that you can playback captured images without any problem but in capture mode all you get is blank screen. Will have to go to Canon but note that Canon repairs these models free of charge when it is the CCD sensor that stops working.

Black screen

If you can play back images ok ( colour & resolution normal ) but in capture mode you have no image then the CCD sensor in your camera is faulty. Replace.
