My Hitachi 50UX26B/27K red picture tube seems to be out of line with the blue/green tubes. When I press the magic focus it runs a short 30 second cycle then displays the number 3 in the bottom right hand corner. I think that it has something to do with the conversions. Would like to be able to fix it myself if possible. The out of line red is mostly in the top left hand corner and slightly in the bottom right hand corner. Can conversions be done manually? If yes, how?

Hitachi ultravision 50ux26b. Two problems. 1. In the top left corner it looks like a dogear with the picture behind it faded and the edges looking blue. This started shortly after a couple of moves...

All projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video or dead set) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. In some cases the TV will also not show any video. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture will not remain in focus.magic focus feature fixs temporaily then condition returns

There is usually 3 flyback (hi voltage transformer) that gives the high voltage to the tube over the red wire.
On the flyback you got two adjustment. Focus and ''brightness'' ajustment. Sometimes, you can ajust from the back and they leave opening for the screwdriver entrance, otherwise, you remove the chipboard panel and adjust those screw. It usually write wich ajustment is focus directly on the flyback. As you can see its a bit of a technical ajustment, plus you have to do it when the tv is running and with the voltage on. Needless to say that its pretty easy to do a short in the electronics circuits. I hope you have someone handy with basics electrical skills. Also this might mean your tv have some parts getting in problems actually, but still it would be the first thing that i'd try in this situation... Let us know...

Plenty of Sound, No Picture

You may have to replace the convergence IC's or the lamps. Impossible to say without having a manual inspection. Best bet is to take it in for a service repair..

Picture is yellow and green

Your missing the red drive on the set. Its most likly the picture tube. Its a possibility that the red drive circuit could be not working so the best thing to do is take off the gree picture tube socket and put the green board on the red tube. Of course do all this when the set is unplugged. if you have no tv experience. its not a good idea to be messing around inside of these sets.
