There isn't a line input jack on this model. It has a microphone input and two headphone outputs. The microphone input can be used as a line input by connecting the external device with an attenuating cable like this one from Radio Shack. You need to use this kind of cable to reduce the signal level to match the microphone input. Without it, you'll over drive the input and get only distortion.

I wasn't paying attention when I looked at the RS cable. It's only for mono, not stereo, so it's not going to help you. You can try using the microphone input as-is, and turn the level down in the Windows sound control panel. This doesn't give great sound, but it's all you can do without a dedicated line-in jack.

Some computers have a special jack labeled line in. If your computer does not have a line in jack, you can use the microphone jack. You can then adjust the volume of the device in control panel under sound options. The headphone jack is only for output. I have seen some computers where you plug in a cable to the microphone jack and you will be asked what kind of device it is.

Notbook gateway mc7321u is not runing windows,,,, only turns on the leds

Not Good Juen: If a computer is running ok, never mess with the BIOs as they are critical to the booting of the system. Any interruption during the Update will mess up the instruction sets and cause the computer to go into limo. A responsible technician can overcome the problem, but I doubt if you have the skills to do a fix.

My son bought a Gateway E-machines from Best Buy. It needs a new headphone jack (piece broke off in the jack). Best Buy wants to replace MotherBoard ($382) to fix Headphone jack. Is this really...

The reality is, Best Buy will only swap parts. there are other vendors on the internet that will replace discrete components. Google for "laptop power jack replacement" to find options. it takes decent skills to do this kind of repair, so research well.

My Gateway laptop says my sound device is working properly, but the sound only works if headphones or speakers are plugged into the jack. how do i fix this?

It sound like your headphone jack is the default sound device. Go to control panel > sounds > look at the devices listed. Click on the speakers that have a device connected to them. You may have two selections for speakers, but one may be tied to a sound device and the other to headphones. Highlight the sound device and click on make this device the default sound device and hit apply.

It may not be the problem of sound card,

try following:
