This is because the is not sufficient signal strength to connect, you can keep the router closer to the laptop, or add a stronger network adapter to your laptop.
2017 necro posted ,why?

I would suggest a new laptop. Windows Vista is no longer supported by Microsoft. A new router and laptop that both use the ac standard should help with your connection issues. A wifi extender can be used if the router's signal does not reach far enough.
why necro post, no calendar?

Same problem. RESOLVED it by going to device manager (hold the Windows Logo key near the space bar and hit PAUSE) Click hardware tab, and then device manager. click the plus next to network adapters to expand it, then right click the atheros wireless connection and go to properties. Click advanced, then find the power save mode. click it, then chose turn off on the right.
did this and my wireless is working normal again. hope this helps.

OK based on the IP address you've given me I can tell that your network card is not getting an IP from the cable modem. The IP you have there is automatically assigned by windows in the absence of a proper DHCP server.
You have 2 options now you can try to manually assign the IP address and connect to the modem or if u have the CD that came with it you can connect to it using a USB connection (most modems have a usb port) and configure the modem manually to give you an IP or at least see what address range it is using and configure your PC to suit.
If you don't have the CD and USB and you want to manually assign an IP address to your PC most modems tend to use 1 of 3 address, you can try either:
192.168.1.1
192.168.0.1
10.0.0.1
to connect to the modem (if you use a ping command from the command prompt with any of the above addresses the one that replies is the ip of ur modem)
and manually configure your PC network card with either
192.168.1.25
192.168.1.25
10.0.0.25
Its a little technical i know but you should be able to do it
Hope this helps you.
If this doesn't work we can try a "tracert" command next to see if we can determine the modem IP
