Try increasing the latency. Depending on your computer, it may not be able to handle low latency levels. Latency is a measure of the delay between the time you make a sound and the time the computer records that sound. With the Mbox mini, the unit for latency is the number of samples the driver collects before sending them to an application as input. Lower latency can make recording easier and more accurate, but not all computer systems can operate at the lowest latencies without introducing noise. Open the Mbox mini dialog and select the latency tab. experiment with higher latency levels and see if it goes away. i have a mxl 990 - somervta_0.jpgThis is what the dialogue might look like. another solution would be to try a different DAW. I had the same problem with my Fast Track Pro in ProToolsand it worked fin on Reaper, Garageband and Logic.

The mbox mini is usb powered, wont work without power so your mac or pc must be powered on and connected. The blue led will be on when powered. Assuming you have the the appropriate cables, you want to make sure the condenser is plugged into the Mic/Line input. (Input 1 on the back of the mbox mini). All condenser mics require phantom power, so engage the +48V switch. Also make sure the DI (direct input) switch is not engaged. The input gain control is located on the front of the mbox... There needs to be speakers connected to the 1/4 output jacks on the back of the mbox or headphones on the front for sound output. Use the large knob for monitor volume control.
In protools: Create a Stereo Master fader track
Create a mono audio track
Set the input of the mono audio track to Mic/Line 1 Arm the track for record (click & make sure the R is red)
You should getting levels and sound output from your condenser.

Make sure you turn the Phantom power on the Mbox2 on as the Shure 87A requires it being a condenser mic.Make sure you use XLR mic cables. These are just things to check on.

I have a MXL 990 studio mic which I recorded one no longerworks

Are you using the original cable for the mike? In order to use phantom power the XLR connectors have to be wired in balanced configuration. Pins 1,2 and 3 must be wired separately. If you use a cable with 1and 3 connected you could damage the phantom power supply and in some cases the microphone.

Signal peaks automatically once track is armed for recording.

Is there something plugged into your inputs, and are the pre amp channels turned all the way down? Also is your 48V phantom power turned off? To prevent damage to diaphragm or electronics of condenser microphones, the phantom power should be left turned off and only turned on after a mic is plugged in and the pre amp turned off and track unnarmed to prevent damage to speakers.

It is possible, you can simply put a Y-cable for Mic or a splitter for the mbox and the Mic. You can plug the mic directly to the mixer then the other jack on the splitter connected to the mbox.

You were supposed to install the software first (which holds the drivers for the hardware) before you plugged in the MBox. I had the same problem, but I had to use drastic measures and reinstall my OS.

MXL 990 doesn't work

Your other preamp does not have phantom power to supply power to the microphone. All condensor mics like this need phantom power. The Audio Buddy provides phantom power, which is why it was shipped with those condensor mics

Sounds like the frame of the microphone itself has become ungrounded. You could try VERY
carefully disassemble the mic and check for a bad ground or a bad wire connecting to the mic
body.
