What software you are using? You could use the Microsoft software. You can download and install it in your PC from: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/takeit/transfer.mspx

Sounds like th FAT (file allocation table) is corrupt, its like the table of contents and if it goes, there is no way the camera knows where it put the pics, there is data recovery programs available online that can help. All is NOT lost....
The format of the camera is not compatible to the laptop , i would like to suggest let the picture processor center to down load to rewritable cd and load to laptop.
Insert the memory card to laptop for reformat it by the time to download picture to laptop no more problem.
