That sounds a lot like a power board or fuse error. Try replacing the fuse if there is one. Replace the power board if their isnt. Make sure that it is plugged into an UL approved surge suppresion or protection strip.

Alot of the playstation 3 systems are having problems overheating. this would be the cause of the system shutting off. not to much u can do unless u know how to replace the fan or if you bought the warranty. other then that you would have to take it to get fixed or buy a new one. hope this helps sorry if it dont

(if it were 4 flashing lights, overheating prob.) the ONLY way to fix this problem is to call Microsoft 1(800)4MY-XBOX they will provide all the shipping materials needed to send it to them free of charge, also the repairs are free of charge. aside from that theres nothing else you can do.
