any wireless router will be ok, they are all the same standard normally 802.11G, but if your adapter is 54MBPS go for a 54G router, or if 108MBPS, go for the faster router.

lol, I've had the same problem and I too racked my brains. I suggest a linksys adapter, thats what I did and it worked out fine. P.S maybe its just not compatible

your desktop has configured with an ip address manually configured or
your proxy is restricting the internet to disable proxy settings in IE go to tools --> internet options --> connections --> lan settings --> and uncheck proxy
For firefox tools --> options --> advanced --> network --> settings --> noproxy
