I have this Rca Tv I bought about a year ago...I read on this site that the common problem of this model tv not coming on is related to the transformer part# 271996. Is that true? And if so is it something a novice can replace without electrocuting himself?
When the HVT goes out, it will take the HORZ output, in short, you will hear a high pitch noise for a sec, when pluged in. As to your question, Its not a hard repair, however its not what I would call a begainer repair. This is what make the high voltage (about 32,000 volts) for you set to work. If you DO try it, becareful. And don't forget to change Horz output p# 274762. After changing the parts, unit will not run for more then 10 seconds. You have to use a volt meter and set the G2 for 290v, with no signal and blue screen. + or - 5 volts will cause unit to shut off.
