Sounds like your pc's usb socket has a problem, try the following...
1. Try a different usb port,
2. Using a small light (and possibly a magnifying glass) look inside the usb port on the pc for bent pins or distortion within the socket causing the pins to touch something they shouldn't.
3. check the usb cable for minor damage, try a different cable if you can, different machines use different ways of manufacturing sockets making some more sensitive to a damaged plug than others.
The pc turning off is a safety system which prevents power being sent through data ports. If the pc turns off immediately after inserting the usb cable then that's a sure sign that there is a bad connection/short somewhere between the socket and the cable.
