Generally natural wood is very predictable in its tonal qualities. Mahogany produces a nice mellow tone (were speaking acoustic guitars here). spruce has a brighter tone. natural wood is also more esthically pleasing (pardon my spelling). there is nothing wrong with composite and man made materials, its more a matter of taste. I prefer solid wood myself, but have played ovations which are fiberglass backed and they are fine too.

Put a seymourduncan in my washburn at bridge. With volume on ten there is no output. If I back it off to eight, it works fine. Any ideas?

Either the pot is wired backwards (easily determined if volume increases in correct direction) OR the pot may be bad. Some defective ones can have a dead spot at the end.

ALSO check for splder splashes casing shorts.

ALSO check that terminals are NOT touching the wood as the BLACK PAINT is conductive and tied to ground.

Washburn guitar mg-20 pick up switch position 5 neck pick up no sound or noise humm or anything. all other positions and configurations work?

if everything is standard on that guitar then the only reason that pick up wouldnt work is because its a defective pick up or a wire is disconnected. it may also be possible that the selector switch is bad. take a small screw driver and tap the pick-ups in all positions while plugged in to the guitar amp and the volumes up ( not all the way) just loud enough that you can hear the tapping. you find the bad pick up when you cant hear the tapping with that pick up selected.
