SOURCE: CD RW/ DVD RW Drive Will not read and Burned discs or burn to blank discs

I suggest a firmware update from Toshiba. If this does not help then your laser in the drive is no longer capable of this task. Also just thought about it but make sure the media that you are burning to is the same as the drive + or - R's

SOURCE: movie skips and freezes during play

This is a common problem on CD and DVD players.

Altini is correct to a point. You can try taking the top case off, removing the DVD drive and taking the top off of the drive. Then use a q-tip on the laser lense. I use a little squirt of windex on the q-tip. Gently clean the lense even if it doesn't look dirty. Make sure you very gently work the lense up and down through it's travel. This will make sure no dust or dirt is interfering with the lense focusing.
Reassemble and try your movies again. This is a 50 50 proposition. If you still have the same problem, the mechanism has likely gone bad. Time for a new DVD player.

SOURCE: dvd player doesn't recognize dvd's of any kind

jusguessin should call Toshiba quickly. The units have a 1 year warranty. Do not open the unit or it will void your warranty (I know, I do Toshiba warranty repairs on their recorders. If anything will make be void a warranty, it's a consumer who opens the unit and pokes around inside).

mooch, clean the laser head. I wish I could refer you to a FAQ because this is about the 10th time today I have written this.

Open the unit. Remove the DVD drive. Take the top off of the DVD drive. Clean the lense with a q-tip with a little windex on it. Work the head up and down gently. Reassemble and test. If problem presists, go buy a new one.

Having the same problem. DVD player loads enough to identify it is a DVD or a CD, but won't actually start playing anything.

The drive wont read any burnt dvds, and ones that have stuff on it show up as blank cds. itll read actual dvd games though just fine.

The actual dvd were also burned somewhere, did you burn your stuff correctly, try playing those cd on another computer.
CLEAN, WASH YOUR DVDs CAREFULLY DON'T DESTROY THEM.
It doesn't look like your dvd drive is faulty.
Please feel free to ask me for further information.

What does "multi layer support" mean. Does it write multi layer discs? or is it able only to read them? Also, what is a lightscribe?

Multi-Layer support means the drive can Read/Write a Dual-Layer discs.

Lightscribe means you can create a label on a disk.

Dvd burner plays dvd's and cd's fine, will burn cd's but will not burn dvd's

Unless you have one of the very latest laptops, your model laptop most likely has a DVD ROM combo drive - which allows you to play DVDs and CDs also burn CDs/
You need to give me the make and model number of your laptop for me to verify if your laptop is capable of burn DVDs.
