You will need to drive the car for it to calculate the miles, when you remove the battery it looses all memory, try driving a few miles and see if it reads out again. good luck.

I have a 1998 Pontiac bonneville se with 218k miles on it. Tachometer works fine. Speedometer works fine. Odometer works fine. Gas gauge, oil pressure, battery, and temp gauges are all fine. Trip meter...

If I had a 1998 car with 218K miles on it and an unimportant thing like the trip meter didn't work I would put a piece of black tape over it and use a GPS as my trip meter.

Burping noise from gas cap, and fuel irregularity once below 1/4 tank

theres two plugs on the fuel pump. one is for pump and one is for gauge if you take pump out of tank and put a volt meter on the two outer prongs in plug then the two inner two of them will read the same when yoou move the level up and down and when you put meter on other two it will change when you move level or the level part of pump isnt working correctly. my old tahoe did that and when it would get to a 1/4 of a tank i knew it was almost out of gas.

My gas guage does not work on my 99 honda prelude. I took it in and the mechanic said my needle was bad. They checked the sending unit first and it is ok....according to them. So I got a whole new...

Check your fuse , check the wires to the gas tank , could be the mechanism inside the tank , if you cant get it working use your trip meter as a gas gauge so you don't run out , just reset it when you fill your tank and refill before a set # of miles , lets say 200 miles , just fill the tank and reset the trip meter , just remember to fill the tank full and reset to 000 every time so you wont run out of gas

My 1997 Voyager appears to be leaking gasoline. It has a 3.0 liter engine and runs fine. But I'm positive there is a leak somewhere because I put 4 gallons in the tank, go about 50 miles and the gas gauge...

It could be the gauge, or the sensor attached to the Fuel pump in the fuel tank. I don't remember if the Instrument cluster has a replace gauge for fuel in that year model, I know the 1994 didn't. To replace the sensor in the tank you have to replace the pump as well, they are 1 piece and run about $200 for the part. I would just start keeping track of mileage with the trip meter if it were me but the choice is yours. You can replace the Instrument cluster with a used one or refurbished one if you like. That will cost about $75 for the part. If that doesn't work it's the tank sensor.

Front tank fuel gauge not working

If the gauge works on the rear tank but not the front, the problem is most likely the sending unit in the front tank. You will have to drop the tank to change it. I guess what I would do is, set your trip meter to zero when you fill the front tank. Then, run that tank to the point where the truck is starting to run out of gas and then switch to rear tank. Keep track of how far you can go on the front tank. Then when you refill the front tank reset the trip meter and switch tanks about 20 miles before you think it's going to run out. It's not a good idea to run those pumps dry. Just make sure you have gas in the rear tank. If you do decide to change the sending unit, run that front tank as empty as you can, also, I would change the pump too. In 92, I think the pump or the sending unit can be replaced seperately. The worst thing about changing those in tank fuel pumps is getting the gas out of the tank. No trip meter? Just write down the mileage from the odometer. Good luck.

The fuel gauge is stuck on empty what can be done to fix the issue?

If the gauge is stuck on empty there is a good chance that the float came off of the sending unit inside the tank. If you have a trip meter on your car you can use that as a gas gauge, just remember to zero it each time you fill the tank. I don't know how far your car will travel on a tank of gas but, I would think you should be able to go 200 to 300 miles. Carry a gallon of gas in the trunk too, you may have to experiment a little.
