That blinking cursor is the way in which the BIOS of the laptop is telling you that it can't load Windows because it's too corrupt There's nothing more you can do apart a full reinstall. Use the recovery disk that has came with the laptop when you bought it.
If you made your recovery disk from the files they put in the hard disk (like many want that you do it now, to save the money on a simple disk) then use it - it's almost as good as the official one.
If that one doesn't work then install using a generic Windows disk and add yourself the drivers later.
I havent made a recovery disc yet and also I dont know how. Do I have to make it from my laptop? If so its too late because I cant event get into windows.
There was an loader program specifically for that in your install, right on the desktop - this should have been the first thing you should have done when you got it. Now it's too late since you cannot access it. All you are left to do is to install using a generic Windows disk that you can borrow from a friend and the key on the label from the bottom, and add yourself the drivers later.
Ive got a disk called Windows Vista Home Basic at the front and is in a green colour. Im not sure if this is the generic Windows disk you are talking about though. This disk came with the laptop I bought which got corrupt.
Yes, this is it, use it and the key it came with.
how do i no when to insert the disc into the drive and also is all my memory and data lost?
You can try to recover your data by using a Linux Live-CD like
http://www.pclinuxos.com/?page_id=180
To use it and, later, the Windows disk you must put the disk in the cd-rom then, when the laptop starts , you press F12 and select the cd unit as boot unit. After that you follow the instructions on the screen.
Ive clicked repair to try and repair the problem, but its saying that there is no problem found. So do i just go on and continue to install windows from scratch?
Yes, it's the only option left.
OK thanks azraelsrl ive installed windows now. However now i have another problem. Before my computer broke down i was using wireless internet, connecting using the realtek rtl8168 driver. But now I cant. The driver is still installed however I cant get access to it. When i try to connect it says there is no network adapter found. Can you please help?
Check to see if it's detected in the BIOS. If it isn't then it has died and it was the cause of all your problems. In that case install an new wireless USB device. If it's detected then probably you must enable it and activate it in Windows (the button on the keyboard) to use it.
Firstly how do i find if it is detected in the BIOS and secondly how do I enable and activated it in Windows? I know Ive been a pain by asking you all these questions but your help is muchly appreciated. Thanks
You enter in the BIOS and in there, in the hardware section, it should be recorded as a wireless LAN device. You start it from the button on the keyboard. If this doesn't work then you go in Control Panel, Wireless network wizard and you enable it from there. If this doesn't work either then it's dead. Use a wireless USB stick instead.
Im sorry but I cant seem to find where the wireless lan device is in the BIOS and there is no hardware section. However I did find LAN device in the control panel and it does say it is working properley but I still cant use it.
The entire BIOS menu and all the settings are explained in detail in th laptop's manual. If you no longer have it you ca get it from the HP site

I think I've found it. Was the BIOS menu you're taking about labelled under the system information? If it is then I've found the Wireless LAN and it is saying that its working. What do I do next?
Yes, this is it. If you are sure the correct driver is installed then it appears that it's defective at a hardware level. The only thing you can do is to disable it from there and install and use a wireless USB stick likehttp://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...
So you're saying that my current Wireless adapter is dead and I wont be able to fix it? ISnt there any other the way to try and resolve this problem?
Yes, if the correct driver is loaded but it doesn't work then it's defective and you will have to use another. No, there is no other way to fix that.
