Black/Grey/White screen with bars

I just got a Genesis (European Version, so actually it's a Mega Drive) and it seems to work alright (all cartidges load and are playable). The problem is that I mostly only have a black-and-white screen (or more acurate, black-grey-white) with horizontal black-and-white bars running over the picture. I tried all SCART and cinch sockets, even all programs on the TV; the result is the same. I even tried letting the console run and turning the TV off an on again, then sometimes I got a regular picture in color and everything but after a very short while it changes back to the aforementioned appearance.

Is this a problem with the console itself or maybe just the cable, or whatever?

I also have a SNES with SCART adapter and that runs without any problems. No, I do not let them run at the same time; not even let them be connected to the TV set at the same time.

If anyone knows about this problem, help would be really appreciated.

Problem solved! It seems to have been the TV set. I was using both video game systems on a Grundig 100 Hz TV set and as there were no problems with the SNES I haven't thought about it, but just a few days ago I got the suspicion that maybe the TV set wasn't able to handle the signal from the MegaDrive or vice versa. Yesterday evening (11 August 2008) I tried out another TV set (with 60 hz), and that solved the problem: Color picture without any bars or whatsoever.

OK, I'm making a few assumptions here

You say you got a Megadrive but it sounds like your from the states
It sounds to me like you are running a Pal system on a NTSC TV or a NTSC system on a PAL TV.

It also sounds like you may of used compersite scart lead or Phono lead.

Make sure your TV can cope with RGB
Because the only way to get a good picture is to use a RGB scart lead.
www.retro-cache.com do these leads for the megadrive(Genesis) 1 and 2

Make sure that you are selecting the right input option, and that your Sega Megadrive is a PAL version.

How do I set up a sega genesis?

here we go
This is a step by step with testing set up for the sega mega drive

first plug the power plug into the mega drive and turn it on (there should be a red LED light)

plug RF lead into the back of the TV and make sure the switch is set at the megadrive side and not the ariel side, if you have a switch. (or you can buy scarts from www.retro-cache.com)

Now turn off mega drive, put a game into the slot and and then turn the console on

Select a channel on your TV and re-tune it into the mega drive. (on some TV's the tuneing is around the C36 area if that is any help)

If you tune into a blank screen than turn the mega drive off, remove the game, clean it and replace the game and try again.

Fuzzy picture and no sound

if it has av cable inputs on the console then its a modified system, and chances are something is either loose inside or fried.
