Dell Inspiron 5160 Black screen on power up

Hi
I have Dell Inspiron 5160 bought 4 years back. When I press power button it is not powering up. If I press shift key it powers up but the screen is black. Only fan is running and the green and orange lights are flashing. CD/DVD tray opens up but no sign of bootin up or anything. To shut off the power I need to remove ac adaptor and then battery.

Can you pl help and suggest a solution.
Thanks in Advance.

I have sort of the same problem i bought a brand new battery because it kept hibernating all the time.when i put the new battery in it the 5160 came right on then i followed the instructions to drain it on the battery alone to program the battery memory i guess when we went to power it back on it would never start up again the only way is to pull the power plug out and press shift key and plug it in then it starts with the fan running full bore but no screen or start up and must unplug the power again to shut it off.

There is a small board that the power button is integrated into that connects to the motherboard. When this power board malfunctions it will cause this issue with the machine. It can, and quite often does, damage the motherboard when it malfinctions. You should take the machine in for a power board replacement and a diagnostic to make sure that the power board hasn't damaged the motherboard.

I have a Dell Inspiron 5160 Laptop that has been working decently for me for a while. I have always had issues with the laptop recognizing the ac adapter but usually been able to spend a few hours and...

Hi there!

First the problem that you were having with the ac adapter can be fix by just updating your computers BIOS.

Now for the computer not turning on try this, first remove battery make sure ac adapter is unplugged then press power button for 5 seconds after that put in battery and then press FN + POWER at the same time this triggers the diagnostic on your computer if it runs then just wait if it will give you an error message. If it fails then try to use just the ac adapter that means battery should be unplugged.

Hope this helps!.

My Dell Inspiron 1545 PC notebook will not load to the WIndows screen. Once booted it just sits on a black screen with a moveable cursor. What can I do to stop this? thanks

Hi pebrouss,

Have you tried power drain? The easiest way to resolve this type of issue is by performing a power drain. Here's how you will do it.

1. First, turn off the unit completely. You may try pressing the power button for about 15-20 seconds.

2. Remove the unit from the power outlet.

3. Take out the battery from the system.

4. Press the power button for about 15-20 seconds.

5. Put back the battery and plug the unit to the power outlet.

6. Turn on the system and observe it.

Hope it helps.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Dell computer won't start up.

if you have 2 memory sticks, (i.e. 2 ram sticks that are 2 gb each) try putting on in and start it.  if it does not work try this.
remove all power supplies (cord and battery).   hold down the power button for 30-60 sec.   after that plug the power in and try turning it on.

Dell inspiron blinking orange battery light. keybrd not respondg

Try this: remove your battery, unplug power, press and hold power button for at least 20 seconds, plug power cord back in but not the battery, press power and see if you get normal boot. If this is the case, your battery probably needs replaced.
