IBM ThinkPad T40 2373 Notebook Logo
Posted on Jan 14, 2011

I just installed the 802.11b+g Atheros Wireless Lan Driver 7.1.0.90 drivers on my IBM T40 laptop computer for the Cisco Aironet 801.11a/b/g Wireless Adapter card (AIR-CB21AG-A-K9). I installed this so that I'm able to connect to wireless networks using the "g" protocol as my T40's internal wireless systems appears to be limited to "b." After having installed the new drivers, I would like to confirm that the Cisco card will take precedence over the internal wireless hardware when it is inserted into its slot. The computer does still recognize the internal wireless after taking the Cisco card out of it. After installing the drivers, I installed a Windows XP update (from the tray) and rebooted the computer. After doing so and reinserting the Cisco adapter, the computer responded with the Installation Wizard. Since I was not certain that the drivers had actually been installed properly, I walked through the installation and identified that drivers location on my hard drive. A the end of the hardware installation I received this message: Cannot Start this Hardware There was a problem installing this hardware Cisco 802.11a/b/g wireless adapter This device cannot start (Code 10). As I gather from reading about Code 10, one solution would be to reinstall the drivers but I cannot tell it the Code 10 error is actually valid. The device does appear in the "Safely Remove Hardware" pop-up box and can be dismounted and remounted. When reinserted, the two lights (status & activity) on top of the adapter return to alternately blinking - seeming to indicate that the device is working. Please inform me in how to determine that the Cisco adapter is actually working and taking precedence over the internal T40 wireless system.

Where is the switch to turn on the wireless for the ibm thinkpad t40

The T40 does not have a switch to turn the wireless card, the correct wireless driver only needs to be installed.
The same model ThinkPads can have several different video and audio drivers and unless you know exactly which one is installed in your ThinkPad, you need to download all the drivers and install each driver until you find the right driver.
When you download the drivers, write down the device driver and it’s file name so you have a record of which driver you are installing and which directory the unzipped files are located on your hard drive.
Go to the IBM/Lenovo WEB site - support/download page and download the latest Windows XP or Vista device drivers for your model computer, Use this link: -
http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/product.do?template=%2Fproductselection%2Flandingpages%2FbrowseByProductLandingPage.vm&sitestyle=lenovo&brandind=10&validate=true
You can download the various drivers and then you click on and run the various driver files, they will then unzip and expand into a sub folder on C:\drivers Then install the various drivers from this folder (run the set-up file).

Not connect to lan adpter

The IBM T40 has a builtin LAN adapter most likely an Intel LAN.
You need to make sure it is enabled in the BIOS.
Also you need to install the driver for this LAN adapter.

How do you know that you got a Siemens LAN adapter, is it a PCMCIA card?
