Sounds like the problem could be heat related. Do you run your laptop in a pillow or blanket or anything like that? Make sure it's on a hard, flat surface.
Make sure the air intake and exhaust holes aren't blocked by anything (including excessive dust particles). You could try and get a "can of air" and spray out the dust if you suspect there is a lot (ie. in a dusty or smoky environment). Make sure there is warm air coming out the back of the notebook so you know it's exhausting the heat properly.
Another option is to check for bad RAM by running a memory checker program. Bad RAM can cause random computer freezups.
There are various download options at their website:http://www.memtest86.com/
I'd download a bootable ISO image and burn it to CD. Then reboot the computer from that burned CD. When a menu comes up, start the memory check process and try to let it run for several hours. If it finds errors, you may want to replace your computer's RAM.
If the computer crashes while doing the memory check, then you may have a flakey motherboard or CPU.

Possible that the harddrive is not running at its normal speed,
freezing up or slowing down. Or has quit.
My computer took 20 min. to boot the other day.
I was watching the HDD activity indicator light,
and it would remain on, and not rapidly blinking.
Mechanical devices do have problems.
Harddrive manufacturers have software for download for testing HDD.
As for my laptop, I had it off for several months, then took over one hour to get the harddrive cranked up to speed.
Also DUST inside Desktop computers can gum up harddrives.
Is yours clean.????
