My WD my book would show as a external drive with a letter assigned and that was how I would back my files.I had unplugged it for a while and now it doesn't show on my computer with a assigned external drive letter. Now I can't back up to the WD drive. It is working properly. Why doesn't it show on my computer in device and removal storage? When I go to my computer and click on properties, hardware, device manager it shows my disk drives ARRAY and WD 2500JB external usb drive. It is working properly. My only problem is because a drive letter is not assigned and I can't backup.I need your help please. God bless.
I safely removed the drive however, if I go to stop the device, to disconnect the system shows it is in use, therefore I cannot unplug. Needless to say I have o drive letter or ability to access my data.I safely removed the drive however, if I go to stop the device, to disconnect the system shows it is in use, therefore I cannot unplug. - try open up the device manager, look for your WD and delete it. then unplug and plug back.
try goto control panels->administrative tools->computer management->disk management and see if your wd appears there. if yes, try change the drive letter assignment.
1. check to see if the drive shows in the "my computer" window as a new drive letter or USB drive. If it does then.... 2. Click and drag the data to that drive or in the "files" drop down menu click on "save as" then locate the drive in the save as drop down and save your data to that drive. You will have to have 2 widows up to do so.
That could even be a USB problem, I have the same one, my issue turn out to be just power. You are not the first one to have that problem. Replace the USB cord and see if that affects anything.
try other usb port, or other computer and see whether the hdd is detected. If still not, try to go to device manager ( http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000833.htm ), and then assign a drive letter to the hdd. After that, try to access it from Computer, if not able to access it, format it (use quick format) and then use this program to recover your files. http://www.asoftech.com/adr/
Since it an external device. dependent on the BIOS, some machine will assign a drive letter and some will not, either way, if the machine detect the device. you can use it as is.
I HAVE SOLVED THE PROBLEM! or at least this works for my my book 1tb external hard drive. when i initially connect it i get the 'new device detected' pop up thing, but then it doesn't show on my computer. However, I have found that keeping the device pllugged into the computer but removing then replacing the power source from the device causes it to show up. That's all I did, unplug the power cord on the back and replace it. The computer says 'new hardware detected' and 'found my book mass storage device,' then it appears on my my computer tab. Hope this works with you as well!
Have you tried in Disk Management Right-Clicking on the drive and selecting 'Change Drive Letter and Paths...' ? That is the normal way to change or add a drive letter to any drive, internally or externally attached (other than by network connection)?
