The brush will not rotate when the machine is upright. The brush only rotates when it is reclined; in use.
On the side of the housing where you place your foot to recline it is a round knob. Turn it one click clockwise if you can; to the "auto" position.
If the brush doesn't turn then when the machine is reclined, it needs attention to the belt and/or clutch mechanism.

Brush is not rotating

Hi Barbara, it's Jack at Dyson.

DC33's brush bar will only rotate when the vacuum cleaner is turned on and reclined into the normal vacuuming position, and the brush control is set to 'Carpets':

If the vacuum cleaner is standing upright, or set to 'hard floors', the brush bar will not rotate.

If you're confident the brush control is set correctly, but the brush bar won't rotate when the machine is turned on and reclined, please contact our experts directly so we can talk you through some further troubleshooting checks. If a repair is needed, we can also confirm if this is covered under your Dyson warranty.

Dyson repair manual

Hi, it's Jeremy from Crucial Vacuum.

In the link below you will find the user manual for your Dyson DC04:
http://www.manualslib.com/manual/534385/Dyson-Dc04.html

Here a few repair tips to make fixing vacuum easier. Your Dyson brush-roll is connected to the motor by two different sized geared belts. Over time, the belt's gears wear down and stretch out losing the grooves and tension that turn the roller. Another reason why your brush is not spinning could be there is debris stuck on the roller and/or bearings. You can either use a can of compressed air to remove the debris or simply remove it with your hand.

How do i alter the dyson dc04 to use on hard floors

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

If your DC04 has a brush control on the cleaner head, you'll need to set this to 'On' for carpets, and 'Off' for hard floors. You can find out how to do this on our Support site:

http://www.dyson.co.uk/support/dc04/dc04-brush-control/my-machine-is-not-working/i-can-see-something-wrong-visual/i-can-see-something-wrong-visual/my-brushbar-is-not-rotating2/does-the-brushbar-rotate-with-the-power-on

If your machine does not include the brush control, it will only be suitable for vacuuming carpeted surfaces and we'd advise against using it on hard floors in upright mode. However, you can use the hose and wand to vacuum hard floors and we have several suitable hard floor tools available which may help.

I hope this helps - if you'd like further advice you can reach our freephone Helpline on 0800 298 0298. Just to let you know, our Helpline is available from 7am-10pm, 7 days a week.

The vaccum dyson 04 has a smell of burning

well there are a few versions of the dc04 what i would do first is clean out the filter and let it dry out completely for 24 hours. then i would turn the vacuum upside down and look at the roller brush. if there is a lot of hair or debris it would cause a burning smell. so clean all of that out. after that the only other thing that it could possibly be would be the belt or the clutch. you know you have a clutch if you can turn the roller on and off for bare floor and carpets. if the roller is continuously rotating then i would check the tension of the belt and for any rubber shavings. if its really loose or you do see shavings then yes you need to replace it. now if you do have a clutched system you will need to take it in and have your clutch replaced. the clutch and labor cost about $100

Dyson dc04 absolute

Hi Diana.

Your Dyson has A clutch this has 2 belts, One goes clutch to motor the second goes clutch to brush roller.

You have either A snapped motor to clutch belt or the clutch control knob is not rotating to drive position when you pull the handle back to clean carpets.

Firstly check the control knob this is situated on the front lower left hand side of machine.
EG if your machine is silver & yellow the knob will be yellow approx 2" or 5cm in diameter as I said ensure it moves from off or park to drive if it doesnt move rotate it by hand when you have lowered the handle to vac carpet.

If still no brush roller drive you will need to strip machine down to remove the clutch & gain acces to the belts.

Its A lot of work to explain so try this site http://dysonmanuals.llc.nu/ for clutch removing manual can send via email very quickly.
