Probably not. The 3970 is an older model (started out when Windows 98 was still around), and HP is apparently not going to develop a driver for Windows 7 for that reason.
I know that isn't what you'd like to hear ;-) but I hope it's helpful.
I just powered up an old HP3970, plugged it into a Windows 7 Dell and it was recognized automatically and drivers were installed automatically. Just like old Windows 98 plug and play promises.
Very interesting. When I last checked on this item, HP did not list a Windows 7 compatible driver for the machine, and it was on the EOL list.
I just did what "myksal" said they did .... and behold - IT WORKED with my Windows 7 !!!! Thank you ... myksal !!!! Now I can use the HP 3970 as my scanner - who cares if I have all that other HP software, I can do my editing with other software !!!!
