Open Microsoft Internet Explorer and from the 'Tools' menu select
'Internet Options'. from the 'tools' menu.
Select the 'Connections' tab.
Select 'LAN Settings'. In the 'Proxy server' section select 'Use a proxy
server for LAN ..., enter your proxy address, and enter port 8080.
'Bypass proxy server for local addresses' is selected if you are
accessing network resources through a intranet. When complete, select OK twice.
NOTE:
After you apply your settings to the web browser test your Internet connection by attempting to access an
external Web site such as http://www.google.com. Test more than one Web
site. If you are unable to access external Internet resources, verify
the spelling of your entries. If spelling is correct, contact your
company's helpdesk to find out if there is a problem with the corporate
proxy server.

Open your Internet Explorer,
Go to Tools -> Internet Options -> Connections "Tab" -> LAN Settings -> Proxy server, uncheck the box -> OK
Restart your Browsers ie IE or Firefox, you don't need the proxy server if your are a home users.

It sounds like you activated a firewall somewhere in there. Calm down and go find out about your proxy server if you were using one in the first place.
Also, what website instructions do you think you followed, anyhow? Lots of websites, lots of instructions...you've given no indication which one you chose.
