where is the drain located on the PT Cruiser

  • msarchive Oct 12, 2008

Seems to happen only when I am idling for some time, such as at a light, or stop and go traffic on the freeway

  • lspringerf Oct 24, 2008

I also have a 2002 PT Cruiser, for only the last 3 months, and I, too, have been plagued with this overheating problem! I have had it in with it's "warranty" 2 different times, both not showing anything wrong with this overheating problem. EVERYTHING was checked, problems with the A/C, Heating, anything else they could think of! I left, with a list of things to "try" to get the problem to return! Nothing I did worked, but after a trip 4 hours out of town, it overheated 3-4 times with my husband driving! Each time we were just idling! And last night, with my husband in the car, it overheated again, this time smelling antifreeze, and we drove straight to the dealership where we purchased it!

We were told the next time it happened, we were to go directly there and have them see it! Of course, no one but the 3rd shift mechanic was there, but he was a gem! He tried several things and after about an hour, he found that it was the cooling fan for the radiator NOT WORKING AT ALL and it had to be replaced! I left it there for the shop to fix today and I will be able to pick it up before they close this afternoon! So, PLEASE check this out! It happens all of the sudden and you will have many more problems arise from it, if you haven't gotten it fixed yet! Hope this helps. Now, I just need to find out how I get my "loss of air" in my front tires fixed! They've had it 2 times, each cleaning the aluminum rims and rebeading the tires. I STILL have 12-16 lbs. of air to replace every 3-4 days, in my front tires! This is ridiculous and I refuse to just accept "It's what happens to a PT Cruiser's front wheels"! I've even had a mechanic tell me that he owned one a while back and the loss of air in one of his front tires was the problem in an accident he had! Unbelievable! Let me know what happens! Linda :)

Same Problem with my 2002 Pt Cruiser. I replaced the Cooling Fan Motor, Coolant sensor, Thermostat, Radiator cap, and Coolant. It still overheats when the Air Conditioning is turned on only?????

  • jodiemb Nov 17, 2008

I just got a 2005 pt a couple of weeks ago with 137,000 mi. It has overheated twice with the past week. I noticed the idle is rough when I have the front defroster on, and tonight i noticed some sort of small puddle under the front part of the car. I'm trying to narrow down the possible suspects: thermostat, water pump?

  • lemonheadsnc Mar 23, 2009

I have a 2002 pt had the head gasket replaced the water pump timing belt thermostat and radiator cap car still overheated so I replaced the fan relays high and low also the fan still overheating should I junk the car

  • the3cookies May 04, 2009

I am currently dealing with this same problem. It over heats only when idling. I had the radiator rotted out and that didn't fix it. Then I had a thermostat put in and that didn't fix it. Now the mechanic said he notices that the fan is not always coming on when it gets hot but the fan does work some of the time. So now he wants to put a new coolant sensor in and see if there is a problem with the grounding of the fan. Does anyone have any advise as to why a fan would only work some of the time?

Hello,
your problem is air in the system.
you need a pressure test to make sure there are no leaks.
than have your radiator flushed.that will fix your problem if there are no leaks.
good luck

Hi,

Pls check the thermostat. It is most likely a sticking or even stucked as that is basically its purpose, to restrict the coolant flow and allow the engine to reach operating temperature thereafter grant free flow of the coolant. It would seem that there is considerable delay in its opening and therefore the temperature rises above the normal operating temperature.

Hope this be of initial help/idea. Pls post back how things turned up or should you need additional information.

Good luck and kind regards.

Thank you for using FixYa.

Engine overheating

Overheating can be extremely bad for a car. Back in the days of carburetors, when engines were made of steel, overheating was much more common, and less damaging. But the modern engine has far less tolerance, with its aluminum blocks and, often, aluminum heads.

Many head gaskets have been blown out by overheat issues. Many heads have been cracked. These are not cheap repairs. Therefore, be vigilant and watch that heat gauge (thermometer). If your car starts to overheat, pull to the side of the road, and let it idle (do not give it a fast idle - that only worked in the days before electric fans) and, if that does not seem to be working, shut it off.

Bohdan Bodnar wrote: "The 2.2/2.5 liter cooling systems *MUST* be purged of air before operation; otherwise, coolant flow blockage will result (i.e., hot, possibly REALLY hot, engine). Partial purging will cause the engine to run hotter than normal; the temperature will gradually drop to normal as the system purges itself over several days/weeks."

96 dodge caravan to show its overheating then return to normal

air pockets in the cooling system can cause this problem. idle engine with radiator cap removed for 10 -15 min. Do not let engine overheat and make sure coolant lvl is topped off. this should bleed all air from system.

Overheating

Ok, here is what I have found with the overheating problem with my 2002 PT Cruiser. I have got all the symptoms that everyone else has gotten form, it heats then cools down, gets hot when it idles, gets hot when AC is turned on. The bottom line here is that it gets hot when it is not going down the road or it may raise a little then go back to normal. This is what I have found after a new water pump, radiator, thermostat, cooling fan. What is happening is that the engine or radiator are starting to collect what I like to call calcium particles. so when the particles break loose they circulate around in the cooling system, when the radiator cap opens to let water out to the recory bottle these particles go out with it, however when the cap closes and tries to seal the radiator back up the particles get stuck under the seal therefor the radiator never pressurizes and continues to let water out filling up the recovery bottlle and then boiling over. I have proved this theory several times (and you can too) by letting the car cool down after a overheating tantrum and removing the radiator cap. Look at the rubber seal and i will bet you find these calcium particles built up on it not letting the cap reseal. I have cleaned the cap and put it back on and driven sometimes 2-3 days without a problem. The reason the temp will go up and down at times is because it deoends on whether or no the coolant has washed all the particles away when it opens and closes. Do a heavy duty and thorough cleaning of the cooling system making sure to get these particles out and you should be fine.

1995 ford windstar overheat after replacing the thermostat

Let your engine warm up with the rad. cap off and see if the coolant level drops. and make sure your overflow is full. It blows cold air because there is no water getting to the heater core. And it shows a normal(ish) temp because the water needs to be touching the temp. sensor. I really do think there is air in the system and there is not enough coolant but hard to tell from here. Also as with overheating any time make sure to check your oil and look for any coolant as the head gasket seldomly holds together if the motor overheats.
