I have 2 Oreckl XL Professional Air Purifiers. One of the unit for whatever reason irradictly changes from low to high speed on its own. I spoke to one of Oreck store manager/repairman, he told me all kind of excuses, 1: it is normal when there are big particles going through the cell, 2: because it is dirty. I cleaned the units regulary every 2 to 3weeks and only one and the same unit is doing it. I switched the units, thinking it maybe an electrical surge problem at the outlet, no changes the same unit was doing unit in the new location while the other one never did switch speed at it's new location. I brought the unit twice to another Oreck store/repairman and twice he told me nothing was wrong with the unit. The story is being going on for almost 6 months and I am not going anywhere. Originally, I had call Oreck and there answer was to take it to a service center and so far nobody knows. Is there someone by any chance who knows what is wrong and have an idea how to fix it. I am tired to wake up in the middle of the night to shut off the unit which now I don't even bother to turn on anymore but I don't believe it is a solution considering the price of the purifier Thank you for your help

Oreck SL will not work on medium setting

Either your switch is not making a contact internally or the wire that runs from the motor to the switch is loose or not connected, or that speed is burned out on the motor. Those motors have a separate wire for each speed, so it's either not getting power to the motor from the switch or the that speed setting is burned out on the motor its self. I would just work around it and use the low or high setting until you can take it apart to test if the motor is getting power from the switch, if so then the motor is bad, usually the bearings go out on the motors before the wiring does. Unless your motor was on medium and was stopped for a long period and overheated that setting which will melt the wires and cause it to not work. They have a safety switch on the motors now to keep this from happening.

I can not get the cover back on my oreck xl air purifier

How about making sure it's not on backwards... Hehe. It only goes one way. If it isn't going back on, you're doing it wrong. Mind the notches and line them up with the unit, logo facing forward of course.

Machine is very noisy especially on silent mode.

Check the fan bearing. Lubricate with spray grease on the spindle but be prepared to replace if no better.

My oreck air purifier xl won't turn on

With the Air 8 Models there is a number of issues from the motor to the power supply to the circuit boards. With these old units it is hard to find parts for them. as oreck no longer manufactures them. but if the parts were availible i would estimate around 100 to fix your power issue

Will not turn on

Are you sure the outlet it's plugged into is still working/ Try plugging the unit into another outlet that's on a different circuit. Also, I believe that Oreck Model has a reset switch on the back of the unit.

How to remove the air cell

  1. Turn off unit and unplug it
  2. Along the front edge there should be a thumbscrew, loosen until it is free
  3. Lift front cover from left edge
  4. Pull cell from unit
  5. remove screen from cell, it slides out from the top of the cell
  6. remove odor/ozone absorber, it is clipped into the back edge of the cell
You do not need to be afraid to set the unit on it's back or side, just make certain not to drop it.

How can you tell if the oreck tower works.mine used to collect surface dirt on the small horizontal pains at the bottom of cell now it doesnt

Take it into an Oreck dealer, first they'll try to sell you a new one, don't buy it. Then they will happily help you out with whatever parts you may need.
