I put new ink cartridges in my hp 2575 about ~six months ago and hadn't used the printer since then. I tried to print and it goes through the motion of printing but nothing shows up on the page. The indicator for ink levels showed it as very high (which makes sense) but nothing is showing up.

The Ink at the head of your Printer Cartridges has dried up.
Try this:

Load some plain paper in the printer

Remove the cartridges from the printer and carefully dab the print heads of the cartridges with a damp paper towel. ( when you start to see ink, the ink is starting to flow).

Replace the cartridges into the printer.

Go to:

Start
Control Panel
Printers
RIGHT click on this printer
choose Printing preferences
services
clean print cartridges 9some papers may print)
follow the instructions and do the heavier cleaning as well

Run the calibration function and allow the paper to print.

My hp photosmart 5514 won't print. I put in new ink-black and color- and it goes through the motions, but the page is empty

I just had this exact problem on my HP 5514. Black won't print after running out of black ink. New cartridge no good.
I tried everything-no good. I suspected the pinholes in the printhead were clogged with dried ink because I didn't change cartridge in time.
The fix that worked perfectly was when I hacksaw top off old black cartridge & removed all foam wicks so now I had a funnel(can see clear thru). I installed the cartridge & filled it with alcohol, printed page & did head clean; then printed few more pages. Problem cleared almost immediately. I then soaked up extra alcohol inside cartridge with paper towel. Removed modified cartridge & installed good one. I guess this could be done for colors as well. I don't know if this is a proper procedure, but it sure worked well for me.

Check ink cartridge on right

Yes - if they are not used they will dry up and be unusable.
Unfortunate but you need to replace them.
For future ref - IF they will not be used in 4 - 6 months
pop them out and put scotch tape on the head where ink comes out
and that should keep them good for several months..
I have done that and close to a year later - was fine.
Hope this helps :)

I haven't used my HP design jet 100 plus for a year. What do I need to do to enable the ink to flow for printing? Should the print heads be cleaned?

It's always good to do the machines automatic cleaning, and also manually cleaning the printheads with a damp lint free cloth. However, regarding the ink cartridges, you're better off just buying new ink since ink cartridges usually last just for six months.
And since it's been a year already it's close to impossible if you're gonna try to calibrate the cartridges still.

Failure of Printer to Print Color

Try using a new HP ink cartridge. I had the same problem with a printer I purchased off of CraigsList even though the ink level was good. I installed a new color HP ink cartridge and it printed without a problem.

Printer prints no ink.

probably you just replaced th "ink" but what you really need to replace is the "PRINTHEADS"
Put new printheads and printer will print like new again.

Put in new cartridge and unit will not print. Goes through all of the motions but doesn't print. Printed many pages before "low on ink" message. Why does it not print now?

It may be caused by some issues. Check:

* Did you remove the plastic from the connections from the cartridge as the instructions indicates?

* Is the cartridge connector from the printer ok?

* Is the cartridge correctly installed?

* It's a new cartridge? I mean, NEW. Not refilled one or a cartridge that expired two years ago.

* Try running one or two "Clean printer head" procedure to see if ink flows.

Good luck !

Wants to print but won't put ink on paper

I'm experiencing the same problem. I tried to troubleshoot through software that came with printer, but no luck. Here's what happens:

The printer worked great for a month or so. Then, I didn't use it for a few months. When I tried to use it again, it acts like it's printing. My computer shows it's printing, the printer runs through all the steps, including moving the print cartridges back and forth over the paper as it should, but no ink comes out on paper.

Any suggestions?
