Have 2 computers connected to Netgear WGT624NA router via ethernet connectors and have operated well for over a year. Now have gotten DSL and have run phone line to modem and via ethernet cable have connected modem to router. Want to be able to access internet DSL wirelessly from third computer- a laptop, but laptop does not detect the Netgear signal. What steps must I take for router to emit wireless signal and/or laptop to detect wireless signal? L. Cooper

Have you tried to reset router. It has to be done in order.
1. unplug router
2. unplug modem
3. shut down computer and restart after waiting 1 min
4. after restarting computer plug power back into modem and wait for all the lights to start blinking
5. after the modem is working plug power back to router and plug in the computer with ethernet cable and make sure you have internet,
6. try to link up with wireless,
If this does not work you will have to setup the router for wireless if it is att wireless you will have to call them to give you the password to set it up.

Won't connect to internest.

first there should be 2 cables connected the device.
1) power adapter
2) ethernet cable from either a dsl modem or a cable modem connected to the wan connector
with most cable modem service its usually dhcp meaning you are always connected to the internet
with some there is ppoe connection where a user name and password is used to make a connection to be on the internet with the dsl modem
there are some dsl companies that are dhcp just like the cable modem companies.
with the ethernet cable connected the wan port on your router there should be some kind of activity light on the router but check with the type connection from your dsl or cable internet provider. also you will need a second ethernet cable to connect your computer to setup and configure the wireless settings and wep protection.

Can i use a wireless cable modem gateway (netgear) to make my current dsl modem connection wireless.

If your DSL-modem has one Ethernet port, then use an Ethernet cable to connect from that port to the WAN port on your NetGear router. Then, the router will provide both "wired" and "wireless" connections to your computers & devices.

Followed all the set up steps but my DSL light would not stay on

  • 1 Plug the Ethernet cable into the Internet port on your wall. If you do not have Internet ports installed in your home, connect a phone line adapter to a phone line jack. The adapter makes the phone line wider so Ethernet cables can connect to it. This does not block your phone from use.
  • 2 Plug the other end of the Ethernet cable into the Internet port on the back side of the Netgear DSL modem.
  • 3 Connect the Netgear DSL modem to a local power source. The power plug inserts into the modem via a small port on the rear of the modem.
  • 4 Insert a second Ethernet cable into one of the numbered ports on the back of the modem. Run the cable to your computer and plug it into the Ethernet port on the computer.
  • 5 Look on the back end of the DSL modem for an HTTP: address. Type this into your Internet browser's search bar. The Netgear DSL modem menu appears on the screen.
  • 6 Select how many computers are to use the modem, if you are using it with other DSL modems and set up a password (the default username and password is "admin"). Click "OK" to initiate the changes you made to the menu. You can now use your Netgear DSL modem to connect to the Internet.

there is no "earthnet" connection. it is an ethernet connection. it looks like a phone cable but has larger ends than a phone connector. the router is connected to the computer via an ethernet cable if it needs to be hardwired to a ethernet port or internal ethernet card. a wireless connection only needs to be an add-on internal card w/antenna or a usb connector hub (it looks like a usb flash memory stick)

here is how it's done. netgear has the same type setup.

I have DSL but it is a direct connection from my DSL modem to my USB connector in the back of my computer, can I use the RT314, RT311, RP114, FR314, FR318 Router as a Firewall?

No, because if there are no Ethernet connections on your DSL modem, there is no way you will be able to connect into a Router that uses Ethernet.
