SOURCE: shattered color wheel

The color wheels for these projectors can run anywhere from $50-$150 plus installation. With projectors now in the 3-400 range it may actually cost less to replace instead of repair.

SOURCE: Optoma DV10 color wheel

Okay, I recently had a loud noise coming from my projector and found online meterial stating that the colour wheel had been damaged. So with a bit of guts I managed to open the projector and found the colour wheel missing a segment.

I removed the colour wheel and the broken piece of the segement and tried to contact Optoma. Optoma turned round and said they cannot sell me the the colour wheel, which got me very upset. Some people claim online that Optoma will sell you the part on a back order at £50. (if you can be a little specific on how you managed to convince them to sell you the part, would be great).

The only option I had available was to send my project to them and they would repair for an estimated cost of £125+VAT. Guess what, you can buy the entire projector off ebay for 150quid!!!

Anyways after fiddling around quite a big online I got fedup and decided to glue the broken segment together and it SOLVED the loud vibration problem. I have colour and picture.

Becareful not to tighten the colour wheel screw too tight orelse it will break another piece of segement (Like I did).

Here are instructions on how to open up the projector.

I cannot guarantee this will work for you as it depends on how badly you have shattered the colour wheel segment, so do at your own risk. I had two piece of the segment broken and a third by tightening the colour wheel screw too tight.

This will work for awhile but the colour wheel does need replaceing one day. If anyone can tell me how you can get Optoma to sell you the colour wheel would be great.

Best of Luck

Dvd10 optoma projector makes a loud noise

Hi, I'm not sure if it's the same problem I had..
I had it on picture mute, for maybe 15 mins, which may not have been a good idea. While it was muted, it made a sparking sound, and then a very loud grinding noise. When turned off, the lound noise stops, and the fan continues as usual for about a minute. As soon as it's turned back on, the grinding noise is back. But the logo seemed to display ok.

I took it in for repairs, and they said they needed to replace the color wheel to fix the problem.

Can I buy and replace a clourwheel unit for my optoma H31 myself??

There is no "color wheel" in these units. These projectors use a series of LCD panels and filters to create the picture as far as I know. That optical unit will not be cheap. WHat is the rpoblem with the unit that leads you to believe this needs to be replaced?

Optoma H30 Projector: color banding

Most DLP projectors have a colour wheel. It's usually hard to get at, and you may have to actually remove everything including the optical block from the projector to access it. This wheel turns on a motor just like a fan, and if it gets dirty it can act up just like a fan.

They are expensive to replace, so you might want to try taking it apart and cleaning it out. Add a small amount of 3 in 1 oil to the motor if you can.

Optoma Projector

No power at all most likely means a circuit board is cracked. A repair of this nature will have to be done in a shop.

Noisy projector

Hi there

It is a pitty that they quoted you so much for the replacement of a colourwheel - because it really is'nt a expensive part to have replaced.

It makes me really mad that some repairers take chances like that with their clients.
