The battery does not affect the back cover opening.
The back can be opened by lifting up on the film rewind knob but on this model, there is a lock. Lift the rewind knob and at the base of the rewind knob is lifted from, there is a safety lock. You have to move this safety lock and lift the film rewind knob at the same time to open back.

You pull up on the rewind knob and it ill open the back.

first push in the rewind button on bottom of camera, then turn the rewind knob to the right to rewind any film that's in the camera. then pull up on the rewind knob to open the back cover.

Pull UP on the knob on top of the camera (the rewind knob).
The back will pop open.

open up the camera software, then when it says camera not connected or just goes off, turn the camera to face the back of the notebook (assuming its the 225 degrees swivel one) , then turn it back again and keep clicking the camera open icon and it will eventually open.

To open your camera back you need to pull up on the rewind lever knob (on the left side of the camera with the lens pointing away from you), and the camera back should pop open. Before you do this make sure your film has been rewound back into the film canister or you will ruin your images.
