I have a d-r2sc toshiba dvd recorder that will not recognize a dvd-r 4.7 gb version 2.1 disc. I get an error message saying "Check disk. May be damaged or may require cleaning". I have tried other disks with same problem I can play an ordinary disk but cannot record. Is this a problem wit the type of disk I am using. I have tried Sony and Kodak disks. They will not work. I have contacted Toshiba Canada and a local repair shop. I am told that the type of blank disk I am using is not compatible with my recorder (manufactured in 2004) and that I need to use a Version 2.0 as recommended by the manual. Is there something there a particular disk that I can use for recording?

I hope you get the alert to this solution below and then get yours working too! I don't mention this below but I was even thinking of taking mine in to a shop to see what they would charge to fix it-probably 2 or 3 hours and parts etc. or maybe a few hundred bucks. Forget it, mine's running now and it was actually as simple as you will read below. If you do tackle this yourself, make sure you GROUND OUT your hands by touching a few metal pieces on the unit so you don't end up sparking something like circuits etc. Good luck

I've got it!!!!!!!

Although this is an old thread, recently I had an idea about my own Toshiba DVD Recorder. Same problem all over the grid when it comes to this model and hopefully some of you who currently have this problem will find my post and once again be using your unit as I am mine. The problem is so simple you'll flip! This Toshiba DVD Recorder device is exactly what we're all using as DVD burners in our home pcs, just a Toshiba in this one though, I had an LG multi-writer, dula layer, blah blah blah and when I opened up my Toshiba unit, saw how the screws go into the sides, the IDE connector is EXACTLY what we will find in our PC's, the Toshiba jumper pin was set to MASTER and like modern day DVD or CD drives, we no longer need to connect an audio connector to get what else, but audio.

Early today I looked closely at my LG replacement unit, saw that the tray is more shallow than the original Toshiba one. Most of you know why the tray is so deep? Because with this unit one can use the cartridge-style DVD-RAM disc but since a PC's dvd tray is not as deep, I just ripped into the case and used the actual ram disc without it. The Software Version for the Toshiba is ZN10 and the DVD Drive Software WAS 1309. The drive software will change to whatever your newest PC-DVD recorder will be. In my case I had a 2006 LG and the Toshiba was a 2004 but irrelevant anyway. One thing you must remove from a PC type DVD recorder/burner, is the front access door and the surrounding trim since inside the Toshiba home unit, no door or trim attached to the Toshiba's DVD unit but of course you would notice that the silver door opens when the eject mech. is actuated.

For 2 years my Toshiba was malfunctioning, would read older discs I had recorded and finalized, some of the other discs I had recorded some things on but didn't finalize, I was able to do so today. The problem I have heard about these Toshibas is that their laser units are el cheapo but kind of ticked me off because we paid $550 in 2004 for this thing and no hard drive of course. I do have an issue with my clock on this thing and maybe because we had it plugged in for the past 8 years or so. When off, nothing on the display, when turned on the display shows the time and then it blanks out and we can only see the elapsed time, counter etc. Not that it matters but don't think I'd ever buy another Toshiba device anyway now.

Hope this has helped and trust me here, if your unit still powers on and you keep seeing the disc read error etc., you can probably find yourself a brand new dvd recorder for about 30 bucks retail and problem solved. Oh yeah, one interesting note and if I hadn't mentioned this now, some of you would realize it anyway, this unit will now record + and - since it's actually a PC recorder device LOL. Stupid Toshiba made this as only one type and that was -R but for the life of me, can't figure out why it couldn't have been both/all types. Really have to add about what I was reading awhile back too, some were advising that one couldn't use -RW types (rewriteables) but the issue actually stems from the laser and unit's weakness at reading better quality discs. The ones I had copied and finalized as WRITE ONCE (only) were really cheap ones and they have always worked. Prior to doing this unit swap I tried a store bought movie and it wouldn't read it at all, then when I did the hardware change, VOILA!

How do I fix the problem if the empty disc says can't record on this disc?

Try a new / different disk recognized by this recorder. Make sure you're using DVD+RW disks. Others will not be recognized.

We have a Toshiba D-VR40SF DVD/VCR combo. It will record happily on a Sony x1/x2 DVD providing it is a disc we have already formatted and recorded on. But with new discs from the same pack, (or new discs...

Since it is doing this with both old disks and new disks, it is not discriminating and we cannot say it is a media incompatibility issue. I just think that the Electronics may be fubar. Wait, I think it has lost the ability to format the disk. That is what your old new disks and new disks have in common - they are not formatted!

Computer does not recognize it as a CD RW drive

When you try to write data to an optical disc, you may experience any of the following symptoms:

* You receive various disc write error messages.
* You experience issues with the drive and the built-in recording feature of Windows XP.
* You experience issues with third-party programs that you use to write data to the disc.
* You cannot read the disc in all versions of Windows.
* You cannot read the disc, or some files on the disk, by using an MP3 player.
* When you add files or folders to a disc that already contains data, some files are lost.
* Recording files to the disc is inconsistent.
* The disc recording operation is consistently unsuccessful.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Troubleshooting specific errors
If you experience one of the following errors, follow the appropriate steps to resolve the error.

* There is no disc in the drive. Please insert a writable CD into drive.
This error can occur if the CD-R drive or CD-RW drive is not recognized as a recordable device. This error can also occur if the device driver has been corrupted. To resolve this issue, see Method 3 in the "General troubleshooting" section and Method 1 in the "Advanced troubleshooting" section.

* Drive not accessible, incorrect function
This error message typically occurs when you try to write to a CD-R or a CD-RW, and the Windows XP built-in disc recording feature does not recognize the CD drive as a recordable drive. This error message may also occur if specific third-party programs are installed. For more information about how to troubleshoot this error,

when you access the CD-ROM drive, the DVD-ROM drive, or the CD-RW drive
* Error Deleting File or Folder.
Cannot delete file name. Files on this CD-ROM drive are read-only. You cannot copy or move files over to this CD-ROM drive.

This error message can occur because individual files cannot be deleted from the CD-RW. You cannot use the CD disc recording feature of Windows XP for random-access storage while you are writing to disc.

To set the service to Automatic, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc /s, and then click OK.
2. Double-click IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service.
3. Under Service Status, click Start.
4. Try to write data to a CD.

Sylvania dvr90vf dvd recorder

Unfortunately without a firmware upgrade the only disks you can use are DVD-R or DVD-RW. The tricky part is that you can ONLY USE 2X speed. Per my conversation with Sylvania there is a firmware update that will allow you to use up to 8x disks, but they are charging $17.00 for it.

SAMSUNG DVD R120 error EC:0207

I had exactly the same problem -- error message of "This disc can be neither played nor recorded. Please check the disk [EC:0207]" after the machine had been working fine for a year. I downloaded the latest firmware from the Samsung website, burned it to a CD-R disk (took three tries until the DVD Recorder recognized the disk -- worked when I used Rocio CD Creater software), then loaded the firmware updates to the DVD Recorder. On the Samsung website you can retrive the firmware update instructions as well. I had to perform the firmware upgrade several times until it successfully updated both the system firmware as well as the disk firmware. After successfully updating both, the Recorder now recognizes the DVD-R disks and I was able to resume recording. I have however, noted some choppiness with the playback of the newly recorded disks. Other than that, the firmware upgrade successfully resolved the problem.
