The dv5 1250 us laptop I got not quite 2 years ago is not booting up. The first light goes on but the hard drive light does not. The happens the odd time and I just take out the battery, put it back in and it's fine. It worked today then tonight I turned it on and nothing. I've taken the battery out a ton of times but it's not coming back on. Thanks for your help

Gee why not leave the bad battery out, and run on AC power
now. batteries short, leave it out. until PC runs again.
does it work now? on AC line power. ONLY ?
the laptop will run just like desktop now, endlessly (AC power ok)
next is the fan running, battery out? yes/no.
if yes, it has power maybe... some.
does the screen ever show text,? or HP logo.. small logo.
if yes that means you do have power, and the screen works
and the BIOS hot keys work : do they?
the hot keys are, F2 F10 , Esc, F8 or f11.
for 2 years prompted with that text.. its in the service manual
the hot keys.
i read you manual in 1 minute flat.
F11 is the recover hot key, does that work
does it show ANYTHING at all ?
(text or errors, )
power on an quickly hammer F11 f11 f11, over and over and bam recovery mode happens

this PC has CCFL lamps that go bad. LCD back lamps all die this old. or turn yellow.
if the screen black all the time out comes the flashligtht
see data now? F2, ESC, F11 key pressed power on.
page 112 in your free service manual
says push ESC to get BIOS,
then F10
F11 is recover your OS.

SOURCE: won't turn on

*Unplug the AC cord
*Remove the battery
*Locate the memory cover on the underside of the notebook
*Unscrew the one or two screws securing the memory cover, and lift up to remove the cover
*Gently slide (away from one another) the metal retaining clips that hold down the module.
*The module should pop up
*Remove the module
*Reinstall the module (removing and reinstalling the module is apparently enough to rectify the contacts)
*Replace the module cover and the battery
*Attach the power cord
*Try to power up

SOURCE: bios says no ide device found (hard frive missing?)

If the BIOS is not detecting your hard drive, then there are two possible suspects here. Could just be your hard drive or it also be your motherboard.

If you have already reseated your hard drive and memory and the symptoms are still the same, then go to the nearest local computer shop that sells HP. Have them try a known-good hard drive on your system. If it works, purchase a new hard drive. If it doesn't work, your mobo needs to be replaced.

I have an HP Pavilion a4000. It just stopped working a couple days ago. Display just rolled up and quit. I've been through everything I know how to deal with. When you push the power button it

First - re-seat the hard disk and reboot the computer. If the computer does not boot up then reboot and go into the BIOS configuration to see if the BIOS detects the hard drive. If it doesn't detect the hard drive then it could be faulty.
Then the hard drive needs to be replaced in the computer/laptop, Windows installed and the computer or laptop's device drivers plus your programs etc. to get a functioning computer/laptop again.

The system disc probably did not come with the computer. You could burn one if the computer is functioning correctly. However, you may consider getting a full version of Windows 7 32 bit and trying to install it through the DVD drive.

You'll have to set the BIOS to boot from the DVD drive once you have the install DVD from Microsoft.

Luckily, Windows 7 can be used on many computers that came with Vista or XP originally, without upgrading the hardware.

The Windows 7 operating system costs about $119.99 depending on where you get it.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/compare/home-premium.aspx

This operating system can breath new life into your old laptop, which otherwise may require replacing.

If the hard disk drive actually crashed and is not recoverable, you may have to replace that hardware part, but hard drives aren't too expensive these days.

Good luck on this repair.

My Computer won't but up- the fan goes, the lights blink on the keyboard but then the hard drive quits spinning. I suspect I have a virus. Can I do anything to fix this? I have a Norton Antivrus program...

You should see the HP logo splash regardless of any virus or what the Hard Drive is doing. Abscence of the splash screen at boot means something more essential, such as the power supply or a motherboard or processor is amiss. You may want to substitute another working power supply. Also inspect the large standup capacitors on the motherboard for swelled tops. If you see swelling then the caps have failed. Most people will look for a replacement motherboard when that happens, though the capacitors can be replaced. Replacement requires a 100 watt regulated soldering iron and good soldering skills, the capacitors themselves are not expensive.

If you are seeing the HP splash at boot, then your bios settings may have gotten corrupted (which you can set to the defaults to clear), or the Hard Drive may have a failure. To default the bios, hold the "delete" key at boot to enter the bios setup page. If you can enter the bios, load the defaults (typically F7) save and exit The system will reboot, and perhaps come back to life.

Laptop won't power up

Have you tried to start in safe mode? (hold the f8 key while booting). This will allow you to go back to a boot sequence that worked. You will need to go to start and select restore. Could be under accessories

The most likely problem is that your Hard Drive has Died.

If you can readily access another Laptop HDD, try it and see.

Other than that, I'd say the Motherboard has decieded to give up the Ghost.

NO its a software crash use the installation disk you said you used......go through the blue screen allowing windows to boot up from that disc let it go right to the end and press "R" for the console (the dos line ) when there enter ....     chkdsk /p

Let Windows fix any problems. When finished remove the disc and I bet it will open windows for you.  Please come back and tell me how did you do because most people that I helped with this problem just run but you know old saying "what goes around comes around"
