The European Television System is based on a different format than our own "pal" even if you could play a movie it would come through with a negative image making it incompatible with our North American System.

Are you in the US? Your TV system is NTSC. The player possibly plays NTSC and PAL(European system) discs on PAL TVs only. Try to find out from the user manual of the DVD player if you can change the output signal to NTSC. Now it is PAL even though you are playing NTSC discs.
Where did u bought this DVD player?US,Canada,and Mexico?The DVD disc. used NTSC region format.Asia,Europe,Africa,and the Middle East.The DVD disc. used PAL region format.They can't be mix or it will not play as u find out.If u move in and out to another region of the world.U must have a regions free DVD player to play either NTSC or PAL regions.
Movies use a Region code. For North America we use the NTSC configuration which allows 30 frames per second and the European code is PAL which limits it to 24 frames per second, while the difference is minimal, US DVD players cannot read Europe's DVDs and they can't read ours.
After reading over your owners manual I can only offer once piece of advice. You should be able to reset your system by unplugging it from the power fully for 60 seconds. This is usually used during a power interruption or surge, but may assist in this case as well.
Go to a search engine like www.metacrawler.com and search for "Swap Magic". The Emotion Engine processor that is reading the data from the game is told not to read certain Discs if the region code does not match the conoles country code. It mayl save a game to the memory card but not play the game or run the movie.
