I cant copy an 18gb .mkv file to my 2TB WD External Hard Drive. The drive is brand new and is formatted to NTFS, and it still wont copy.. it does not say that it wont fit.. it copies until it is approx 75% complete and then stops and freezes other programs that are running on my computer.. I also have a Maxtor 1TB external HD, (also formatted NTFS) and the same thing happens... so i am thinking it must be something to do with my laptop... I have searched everywhere, and the only answer i can find is that the drive is FAT32 and needs to be formatted to NTFS, but my drives are already that.... I have no idea, please help...

Sounds like the file you're trying to copy is corrupted, and or protected and windows copies it until it hit the portion that it can't read.

FAT can't handle 4 GB+ files, it is a very old File System

That the drive on his laptop is formatted to FAT32 is a non-issue. While it is true that you can have larger hard drive sectors using NTFS, FAT32 will just use a larger number of sectors to store large files. While that will cause it to take longer to read and write very large files, it will not prevent copying or moving of files. But if a file is corrupted windows can lock up while trying to read the file. Also some copy protection implants data that windows cannot read, when using the file this data is normally ignored, but when copying a file windows tries to duplicate everything and since it cannot read said data, one of two things usually happens.
Depending on the type of data used, either a read error is generated, or in some cases windows locks up, trying to read data designed to be unreadable to windows.

How to format WD Essential 2TB for Mac

If you want to use this USB external hard drive to exchange data between a PC and a MAC then format this hard drive on a PC, BUT format the hard drive in FAT32 not NTFS file system.
Then MAC can read and write files on this hard drive as well as the PC.

Hi , I just copied my hard drives to my new Passport Essentials SE using the WD Smartware software, I do not like I have to manually switch between my two internal hard drives to back up so I would like to...

As far as I remember WD just copies the software into the PassPort drives and you don't have to install anything you can just run the software from the drive. If that is still the case then first take a backup of that software (basically copy that software folder to some place in your internal drives) then format the drive (make sure you select NTFS as the file system for the drive when formatting).
Formatting will erase all the files in the drive so make sure you have backup of you personal files also.
Formatting also resets the drive back to factory setting (if you want the WD software back then just copy it from the backup to the PassPort drive).

Why can't I copy larger files than 4 maybe 5GB to my passport WD? Is there a quick way how I can change this?

Your disk is formatted using FAT32 file system. FAT32 has a maximum single file size of 4GB. Reformat your drive using NTFS file system to enable file saving larger than 4GB.

To reformat the drive:
-insert external drive
- open "My Computer", point your mouse over the drive letter of your external drive, right-click and select "Format". Select NTFS from drop-down menu under "File System".
-click "Start" button

Please note that all data will be deleted so please backup your files before formatting the drive.

I am having a problem copying large mkv files from a WD 2TB mybook to another WD 2TB mybook. they are both formatted to NTSC. I had no problem loading the first drive but the second one is giving me fits!

In order to fix this problem, be sure that the drive is formatted to NTSC. Mine was, however, when I started loading mp3 files to the drive first, it somehow got reformatted to FAT32. I don't know how, but it did. Copy your mkv files FIRST!

My SmartDisk 80 gb FireLite hard drive says it is full but it is empty. What could be the reason for this and how would I format it? I use a Macbook pro. I dont want to have to buy a new external...

You will receive an error message when copying a file larger than 4GB to the hard drive if the drive is formatted FAT32. The FAT32 file system has a file size limitation of 4GB. You may also receive an error when backing up to the hard drive using backup software. To correct this problem you will need to format the drive to NTFS. If you are using Windows ME or 98SE, you will not be able to use NTFS.
There are some products that do not support the NTFS files system or changing their file system. If you own a FlashTrax/FlashTrax XT/FotoChute/PhotoBank/USB FireLite XPress, you cannot change the format of the drive to NTFS. It must be kept as FAT32 in order to operate properly. If you are using SOHO NAS via ethernet, do not format it to NTFS. If you have any questions, please contact technical support before you format the drive.

Warning: Formatting a hard drive erases all data from the drive. Please backup any data prior to formatting the hard drive.
To format to NTFS, open My Computer.
1.Right-click on the Verbatim hard drive, left-click on Format.
2.Select NTFS as the File System.
3.Place a check in Quick Format.
4.Click Start.
Once the format completes, you will be able to copy files larger than 4GB to the hard drive.

No space error

This is due to the file transfer limitations bound by the file format FAT32 (no files larger than 4GB and no folders that contain more than 1000 files). Try formatting the drive to NTFS.
