Sorry to tell you this if it is making a loud noise especially in spin like a jet engine firing up its the rear main bearing that the tub shaft goes thru to connect the belt to the motor. Its definitely not worth fixing your looking at $450 to $800 to fix because of part plus labor charges so I would go buy a good quality used one or a new one for that price sorry for the troubles.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR ANSWER, BUT IT SEEMS TO HAVE THE SAME LOUD SOUND ALL THE WAY THROUGH THE CYCLE. DO YOU STILL THINK THAT IS THE ISSUE? COULD IT POSSIBLY BE THE PUMP ???

Yes it can have that noise all the way through the wash cycles. If it already isnt making a metal grinding noise it will in time the bearing is just that worn out I see 1-2 of these a week sorry for the trouble and your welcome!

This is my last posting... :) So I guess I will have to be happy I have gotten 15 years out of this washer? : ( If I buy a new one, am I foolish for considering a front loading washer, any brand?

Your Fine thats not bad at all for that model style of Maytag funny thing is Whirlpool bought out Maytag so they make all there washer and dryers now they still say Maytag but have Whirlpool gutts and yess definitly stay away from front load washer's there junk use to work for sears and we would have a q/a time with the people at whirlpool and other companys once every quarter and a tech asked why the front loads are breaking within a year and are junk in 5 years they advised were in a sociaty where everyone wants the latest and greatest so they built them only to last 5-10 years as to where the top loads still last 20-30 years. But get a top load Whirlpool, Kenmore, KitchenAid, Roper, Estate, Igles, Maytag are all built by Whirlpool so I would stick with them there parts are cheap and they last a lifetime we back them 100% GE comes second and stay away from frigidare!

The nut that holds the main biggest pulley under machine has worked loose. Depending on how long it's been grinding, pulley and splutch that gears on pulley seat against may need replacing. Use lock tite when putting pulley nut back on.

My Maytag goes out of balance and bangs loudly

This is usually due to the floor not being perfectly level, and as a consequence the washing machine not standing firmly on all 4 supports.
There should be at least 2 adjustable feet under the machine, try to make it stand as level as possible, with uniform load on all four.
If you have a bubble level it may help you establish, if there's an obvious slope on your floor and adjust the machine so that it's well levelled.
Good luck!
