I have a Lennox heat pump, approximately 15 years old. This morning I woke up and noticed that the house was cold. I attempted to raise the temperature but nothing happened - the heat didn't kick on and there were no lights on the thermostat. I went outside to look at the heat pump and saw that the metal box above it, which I'm assuming is a fuse or breaker box, appeared to have been burnt up. It's covered with soot and even the vinyl siding next to and above the box is melted and blackened. I have a service call scheduled for tomorrow and I've shut off the power at the panel for safety, but I'm wondering what might have caused this & what the worst case scenario might be as far as repair or replacement. thanks

Hello,
Something inside of the unit caused a direct short between the unit and that fuse box/panel. Usually a short that causes this much "fuss" is a dead compressor (worst case scenario). If there are no lights on at the thermostat then most likely the breaker for the furnace has tripped as well. There are 2 seperate circuits- one for the air conditioner and one for the furnace, they both tie back into the main electrical panel inside the house- wherever that is.
Hope this helps, James

I have a Rheem Heat Pump unit. This winter, the outside unit fan at times trips off, but the inside unit keeps running continuously. I woke up one morning & it was 62 in the house. The inside unit ran...

Dear Friend!

Due to very low ambient temp, the fan will not run. Once the pressure build up, it's automatically run for some time and again cut off. But if you keep Heat mode and still tem not raised in your room means the reversable valve not working and hence the compressor and out side fan also will not work. Keep "Heat" mode and temp setting +29 to get better heat. Hope is it helpful?

Have a large new house with lots of vinyl clad wood double hung windows on a lake temp today this am is 0 F we have a HRV system house temp is 66 downstairs and 58 upstairs heating with a heat pump and...

Really not efficent to run a heat pump at those temperatures. Below freezing is not good for the compressor in the outside unit. The humidity in the house with the low temp. is causing the condensation on the windows to freeze. Kinda like an air conditoner does in the summer without the freezing humid air from the house goes over the cold a/c coil and the moisture condensates on the coil running down to drain pan. raising the temp. in the house and lowering the humidity should help. I would also recommend running the electric heat in low outside teperatures.

My deep freeze outside will not stay cold.

a freezer is just a heat pump . from inside the freezer to the garage . the first law of thermodynamics says heat travels from a hotter to a colder surface . it could just be the cold how much are we talking?

Electric furnace blows cold air before and after warm air.

It is normal. Your house has to go down a couple more degrees because the heat pump is not working. You can solve this by rewirng you thermostat. Take off the wire that goes to Y and tape off. Then take the wires that are marked w and e or w1 and put the wires to yellow. Do not run ac with it wired like this. If you need more information please post me back
