My magellan 760 doesn't acquire the satellites anymore. I already pressed reset gps through diagnostics but still doesn't work.

  • Anonymous Oct 21, 2011

sorry for the late reply. I had given up on my magellan gps 760. My wife bought me a new one and so I stored my old one. But recently I decided to get more aggressive and try to fix it again. I opened it up, pulled out the antenna, re-connected the grey wire that connects to the antenna, and checked all the wires making sure all were connected and checked for broken wires. Everything looked ok. I've been turning it on everyday i hit the road, but still won't work. I think it needs a new board but that
    is beyond my capabilities.

Hey lluny,
Good to hear you've already tried doing that.
There's a silver/black (diff. models = diff. color) cable inside your unit that sometimes comes unplugged. You'll see it as soon as you start opening your unit. So soon that you'll want to be careful when you are first opening. Make sure it's plugged in securely, I'd even unplug it and plug it back in.. but that may be risky & put too much pressure on the base solder. The last thing you'd want to do is permanently damage your main board.
Let me know how this works out and if you have any questions. If you do attempt to pull the cable to unplug/replug try to squeeze gently

Magellan Roadmate 1412 won't track satellites

It might mean that the signal is disrupted. Might be a software glitch. Try going outside, get a clear view of the sky. Then reboot/reset the unit. Hold the switch to the reset position or off position for 10 seconds, it will shut off. then switch it back on. It should reacquire a signal within 2-5 minutes, then it will fix on your position. If that doesn't work, try updating your software. Call Magellan Tech Support for instructions.

Does not pick up satellite signals

The gps device is not receiving signal simply because the strength to receive signal is weak. What you have to do is to reset the gps device by holding the power button for about 15 seconds or there about, then you release it when the gps restarts. It will acquire signal after resetting the device. If it does not acquire satellite signal. You can also try to use the gps in an open space where the gps will be facing the sky, if it does not, then you replace the antenna of the gps device.

Hope this information helped.

No signal in two units, did reset with magellan tech service, still gets stuck in the same location and no signal

Plug it in, turn it on and let it sit out in the open. If the unit is working at all, it will eventually find and lock onto the satellites. The 760 I'm using now came from California and it took over 2 hours to lock on. When I start a trip now, I let it sit before starting to drive and it locks on in just a few minutes.

Magellan roadmap 760

The Magellan 760 has been around for a few years now, and unfortunately, isn't one of the fastest units around when it comes to synchronizing to a satellite. I find with mine that the time it takes to lock onto a signal depends on several factors:
1) Having the GPS mounted in a way that allows the antenna to have a clear view upward 2) Having my vehicle in the open, so that the signal isn't impaired by adjacent buildings, overhanging trees, etc. 3) Being stationary while the GPS attempts to get a lock. It has more problems locking while moving. 4) Ensuring that the GPS is used frequently, as it loses its memory of what satellites it's synchronized with if you happen to be in a different place when you turn it on than the place you were at when you last turned it off.
Those last two points have the most affect on my GPS's performance. I find that by turning on the GPS and just parking in my driveway or parking lot for a few minutes will allow the GPS to acquire a signal in a much shorter time than if I start to drive immediately. While this will waste a bit of time on the front end, it does help you get synchronized more quickly

How do I reset my magellan roadmate 760?

Hi,
Your magellan roadmate 760 unit does not have any reset option. To over come the signal problem just follow the trobleshooting steps givven below .............

NOTE: If you are trying these steps from your vehicle, it is
Recommended to follow when the vehicle is in a stationary position.
Make sure that the device is exposed to the clear view of sky.

With the antenna pointing upwards, remove the antenna and then re-insert.
Swivel it up and down to make sure its securely placed.

wait for few mins and check the signal indicator.
Still not working,
  • Turn on the unit and select any user.
  • Make sure that the antenna is in the upright position and the unit has
a direct line of sight with the sky.
  • Select 'Option' from the keypad.
  • Then select 'Configuration'.
  • Scroll down to select 'Diagnostics'.
  • Scroll down again to select 'Initialize GPS'.
  • At this point you would receive two options, 'Yes or No' - select 'YES'.
  • Now scroll down and select 'Set GPS Position'.
  • Enter your City, Street name and number at the corresponding
    prompts.

NOTE: The address that you are entering in the Set GPS Position should be the address at which you are at that point of time.

Unit will not acquire the satellite signs

FYI ....My Roadmate 760 would not aquire a signal, I went to diagnostic screen and found it was detecting/tracking 0/0 satellites. Held the plugged in unit out the window and within 10 seconds was tracking 7 satellites! Turned out my 1999 Olds Silhouette Van has a anti-glare filter inside the factory windshield that blocks GPS signals. My wifes 2001 Chevy Impala also has same type filter. Check your windshield, filter is visible inside glass to within about three inches of edges of glass. Worth a look.
