If a floating thermometer is more than 3-4 Degrees F off what the control panel display temperature then the temperature sensor has likely failed.

THAT smell was probably your motor burning up. That happens quite a bit actually however, for you this means you will need a new pump. Get the pump out and look at the pump model and name then you can find the correct solution.
