This great monitor has been flawless for the past four years. It is now experiencing a problem which is minor but a bit anoying. The picture brightens and dims slightly in intensity about every 20 - 30 seconds. What's the fix?

I understand the tube aging concept. This does not explain the alternating bright/dim of the screen and at such a long 20-30 interval. Please expain. Can the floresent tubes be replaced to alievate this problem?

  • Chi Chu Jan 04, 2011

The LCD screen floorscent tubes can't not be change,as i explain incorporate inside as parts of the whole LCD screen itself.

This Pioneer unit is a PLASMA not LCD. Is the tube dimming still true?

  • Chi Chu Jan 04, 2011

Yes,the Plasma screen floorscent tubes use the same concept except used brightter stronger gas like Neon gas. That why Plasma have more problems with images burn in problems,if have the same images on the screen like 2 or 3 hours, will have pixiles burn in as a LCD screen dosen't,because of gas products less intensities.

Had my monitor for four years, great performance

jlallen54, When lcd panel goes to a dark condition please shine a bright flashlight 1 inch from screen an tell me if screen data is still displayed during this "blackout" condition. It might be just a single (1) poor and now thermally intermittant solder connection on the printed circuit board inside the monitor. Do some reading first and then you will understand the problem that your monitor has. 12fixlouie

Samsung syncmaster 215tw monitor flickering

The capacitors BigTech referred to are C110 & C111, 820uf-25V Electrolytic, on the power supply board.

With minor soldering skills, you can replace them with Radio Shack in-store capacitors, Stock # 272-1032, 1000uf-50V Radial Lead Electrolytics for $1.59 each. Works great!

Four bucks and little bit of time saves the monitor.

It sounds like one of the capacitators inside the monitor is malfunctioning, these little things store a certain amount of necessary power and then discharge it when it is needed.  If it is malfunctioning, it could explain why it takes so long to charge, and why when you hit it, it suddenly comes on.

Picture is not exactly lined up

That's in your vertical cirsuit and most likely caps that are failing.. You might notice that it gets a bit better or worse after it's been on awhile. Clearly worth the service to have a tech ESR test the caps in the vertical circuit and replace any that are questionable. Always replace C2p05 100 mfd 16 V on this set, in fact most all 100mf caps are usually found stressed.
Good Luck!
