SOURCE: computer does not recognize new 1TB ext HD
First I had to reseat one of the drives which had worked loose and become unseated during shipping. Then I had to format the hard drive and finally I had a 1TB external hard drive I could use. The light is still red.

Whether your computer is a laptop or desktop does not inherently decide if the drive will work or not. If it can't see the connection, there must be another problem with the drive. I would suggest reporting what you have done to try and make it work and anything you notice out of the ordinary (how lights on the drive are acting, noises the drive is making, alerts you see when you plug it into your laptop, etc). That will allow us to better help you find a solution to the problem.

SOURCE: I have data on my CAVALRY ext storage hard
sounds like it's time for a disk recovery exercise. Check the repair directory on fixya for your zip code. That's about all you can do at this point. Hope you had it backed up.
