I have been given an old IBM ThinkPad T42 complete with mains charger, but I have an unusual problem with it.
When I switch on the computer with the charger plugged into the mains, the screen stays blank, and the computer halts prior to BIOS start-up, although you can hear the internal fan operating.
If I start the computer using only the laptop battery, then the computer boots up and operates correctly. Once booted up I can plug the mains charger in and all works well, even the battery charges.
The operating system is Windows XP.
The mains charger is not marked IBM but Delta electronics with an output of 19V 3.42A, centre pin is positive.
Have you encountered this problem before?
Thanks
Ian

there's a small switch usually located physically on the body of the laptop or sometimes on the inverter called a close lid switch. it may have gone bad, you can either try to replace the inverter to see if it helps or you can look for that physical switch
Hi, This is a motherboard issue, this is a know issue on T42 you should contact Lenovo support to get a planar replacement.
Thanks and have a nice day

You have to completely disassemble the whole laptop in order to get to the motherboard & actually remove the original soldering to remove the DC power jack from the motherboard. One thing you need is the right tools (Screwdriver) and the soldering gun.
Google & research a guide for disassembling your IBM Thinkpad T42
If the Laptop wont work off the power adepter, it also will not charge. The adepter could be bad (even if showing a power light) or the connector on the laptop could be broken. The best test is to take the battery out, attach the poweradepter and try to start the computer if it starts, your battery is at fault. If nothing, suspect eh charger first. Be sure the pin on the Laptop power connector isn't bent or broken.
Also, have you changed anything lately? and, Did this just start happening out of the blue, or did something happen to cause this, ie... power failure, kicked the plug out, ran the battery completely dead, overheated, etc...?
