My KDS-R50XBR1 will power on with picture for approx 1 second with the power light in green, then shut down automatically and the lamp light blinks 4 times. Is this a bad lamp only? Thanks! Mike A.

Hi, If Lamp light blinks then it is lamp that is near to end of its working life. If standby light is blinking then it is some thing else, when did you replaced lamp in tv last time? Thanks.

Hi, 4 times blinking light indicates problem with exhaust fan in KDS-R50XBR1 and possible causes are as follows: -Fan 1-4 power is not supplied. (ASU board) -Fan connector is not attached securely. -Fan caught wires or harnesses. Please check exhaust fan in tv, it is located at lower right of tv looking at rear of tv. Thanks.
Hmmmm! i suspect the INVERTER that drives the lamp, or it could be the power supply check for swollen capacitors on the board inside, and last it coul be a overheating component (is it wors after it's on for a long time)
Its time to replace lamp in this tv because existing lamp has reached to end of its working life span and causing problem. If lamp got broken, you will see lamp light lit on tv front but weaker lamp cause above symptoms. Lamp replacement procedure is easy and written in user manual. Buy Sony original lamp for good and bright picture in tv. Thanks.

Check the fan that cools the bulb. It is directly behing the bulb. It should turn on when the power comes on. It apparently has a safety to protect your tv(and home). mine is in the process of going out. looking for online solutions as we speak.
I too have a Sony KDS-R60XBR1 tv and the issue that you are experiencing is due to one of your fans in the rear of the tv is not working. The tv automatically shuts off in protective mode. Make sure the POWER/STANDBY light is blinking and not the lamp light below it. Is the power/standby blinking 4 times in red? If, yes then its a fan that needs to be replaced. If its the lamp light blinking then you need to replace the lamp. The lamp is easy to replace by ordering the lamp either from Sony for $250 or find it cheaper for approx. $150 from other DLP sources and replace youself by following your manual. I hope this helps you.

If you are positive that the fan is still running and that it isn't an over heating issue, I would venture to say you need a new dlp lamp. Your model uses a Sony XL 5100 dlp lamp. You can grab one over at DLPLamps.com.
